I do this trick with JJ's output tubes. Start at low idle dissipation (like 8 watts per tube). Check to see if the tubes are gassy or have contaminates. The bottle will have a lazy blue-purple glow. Sometimes, this glow will flicker. Let the amp idle for 30 minutes to 1 hour, if you see this. Check to see if the purple glow has gone done. Or decreased a bit.

Now, rebias the amp to around 10 watts per tube. Sound ok? No red plating? You can go to 11-12 watts per tube. Recheck the bias after first use. Then, again, after a few sessions. Should stabilize by one or two readjustments.

BMW2002Ti, I have tried the trick however there was no purple glowing at all.

JJ6V6 are very different to TAD 6V6

More headroom and more bottom (and a bit of extra power)

Now, do you normally bias them as 12w tubes or use some other (higher) value?!?!

12-14 watts per tube is fine. Tone and no red plating should be end goals.

The new power transformer changed the voltage significantly .. up to 453VDC (from 382)

Good job! Bet that is one very nice sounding amp. Mine has a healthy tone, almost a 6L6GC tone, up to about "5-6." Lots of overhead. OD is more pronounced than a PR. I'm sure the tranny used and the type of PI has a lot to do with the tonal differences between the two amps. As well as the power supply layout.

How does the amp compare to your Pro Reverb?

I find both DR and Pro to have big similarities (tone wise) ... AA165 versus AB763 ..... not much difference, apart from speakers configuration and nearly double the power (Pro), both sound very similar.
Looks like the JJ tubes are very close to 6L6's, as 6V6 are more compressed (in a good way).
The power tranny (453VDC now) changed a lot, and made the amp more vocal and a bit punchier.

And that is why the JJ 6V6 only lasted a couple of days in my DR. It changed the tone too much IMO, it lost that sweet 6V6 tone the amp is known for. RCA 6V6GTA are the only power tubes in my DR

Each to their own, bit I prefer more ballsy sounding JJ6V6 to TAD 6V6

I may also try some nos 6V6's to see what other tubes sound like in this little amp. :D

Nikola,

You may want to keep an eye out for 1950-60's brown micanol based, gray-glass, black plate, mil spec 6V6GTY's. And Raytheons are the best by far. Sylvania, GE, RCA are good too. But not the creaminess of the Raytheons.

All the Raytheon 6V6GTY I own have red-orange lettering on base (raised-up, stylized "YTH"). And are JAN-CRP. Light graphite coating on inside of glass. Semi-gloss black plates. The 6V6GTY can push 14 watts per tube easily (push-pull, Class AB1). And take even more plate voltage, than the gray-glass, black based RCA 6V6GT's of the same era.

My experience was the exact opposite... The JJs were very clean and had no character, the TADs were the closest to the RCAs. Which TAD 6V6 did you try?

How would you compare the GTY to the RCA 6V6GTA? I'm always interested in trying new tubes, so I'll be keeping an eye on some Raytheons...
