Today I finally tracked down a head match to my small '66 Bassman cab. I have a bit of cleaning up to do on it and some grill cloth but the rest of it is all original.

Yes I know pics or it didn't happen...I will post them up tomorrow when I do the clean up.

It sure has some nice tone and it can make those Jensen C12N's talk...I am sure digging this puppy.

Yeah I knew you'd bust my stones for taking so long :!: :!:   ...But this one sounds so good and it was local...so I just needed to talk him down into acceptable price territory!

Worth the wait IMO.

I wanted a minty Princeton Reverb for years but damned if I was willing to spend two large to get one. When such a blackface "target of opportunity" from 1965 finally appeared I was more that happy to write a check for $625.

"How sweet it is!"

Tony,

Congrats! Now, the Million $$$ Question. Is it an AB165 or an AA864?

I'm still waiting for my small 2 X 12-inch DIY cab to be made.

Can't wait for photos...

:D  :D

It's a mid '66 amp -- what do you think?

Arjay,

Guess it's either AA165 or AB165. Oh well...

I'm certain that it was originally wired as an AB165.

Was the amp modified back to Leo's AA864? Be interesting to trade mod notes. This is one revert that I've never seen posted on the Net. Not in the complete form --- including bias circuit, PI, gain stage, global and local feedback circuits. Step-by-step.

From Tony's description of the amp and what the seller told him, I think the amp is mostly unmolested. It does need new grill cloth on the valence panel but I think I've got that covered via some material that I harvested from a '65 Showman cab.

Really, that AB165 is not all that bad. It's just far from the classic tweed Bassman tone. All that feedback lends to a very clean tone. Strong transients. Going bafck to the AA864 does kinda bridge the gap between post Leo and tweed Leo designs.

I wonder what was in Fender's mind to alter the original AA864 so much? And they kept playing with the circuit. The AC568 and AA371 being two of the strangest Bassman circuits. The PI and output section were really fair game, in those days.

CBS had a bunch of engineers left over from their abandoned attempt at designing and building consumer television sets -- they had to find something for them to do.

OK...the pics are in. This appears to be an AB165...according to the tube Chart (Right Arjay?) The amp is all original...well the chassis certainly is...It will be heading for a CAP job soon as the originals are BB'ing out. Amazingly this amp was pretty damn quiet even with the old worn out caps, it didn't get noisy until you cranked it all the way to 10!

As you can see, I didn't skimp on the photos this time. I have the cab all cleaned up along with the face panel. I also put the Tube Chart back together, most of the pieces were in the bottom of the cab so I reglued them all together...it appears the chart was just missed as you can see the big gob of glue, but they missed putting the chart into almost any of it. It was just flapping away inside, surprised it (and the pieces) were even still in there.

A big thanks to Arjay for grill cloth for that valance...it will be on its way to you soon!

Ok let the questions and games begin.

Tony, Congrats!

Seems to be original components in the circuit. It's an AB165. I've looked at this part of the circuit, until my eyes fell out of their sockets.

BTW... how do you set Photobucket, so that you can't click onto the photos/links?

Don't want strangers looking at my girly.... uh .... I mean circuit photos.

Thanks BMW2002Ti! I am glad I got this particular amp. Can't believe is sounds as good as it does...without biased output tubes (doesn't appear to had anything changed in the bias circuit), sovtek tubes (those will not be staying in the amp) and worn out caps.

I can't wait till it is all back together and back from my amp tech!!

To be honest I am not sure how my photobucket got that way. I do copy the "direct link" when I paste into the forum.
