The F&T 25+25uF 25V Cap Can

Image

This thing is a full 2" long and 1" in diameter !!

It's as big as a BLU-82 Daisy Cutter Bomb !

It took some very creative contorting of the adjacent Carbon Comp leads to squeeze them onto the board, but it went well.

Also shot some clear RTV under it to control microphonics, though honestly, if these Bad Boys ever start resonating the Amp will fall over.

If they fail, I'll just hollow one out, stick it in the yard, and let the Dog sleep in it...

cheers!

You know that cap is the same size as the 33/33 at 450VDC multi-section F&T. I wonder if this is a case of mis-labeling? I bought a couple of 25/25 at 25VDC, but haven't used them. I just twist two 33mfd/160VDC together or two 25mfd/50VDC Sprague together. Fits & works fine.

Not mis-labeled, I checked their capacitance before installing them - 25uF one side, 26.2uF on the other.

Just had to 'bow' the leads of the adjacent resistors to get the can down on the board rather than risk having them vibrate.

They're just Big...

cheers!

No not the capacitance, but the voltage rating. Maybe they are really 25/25 at 450VDC caps.

Just a thought.

Well, you might think so, even 1,000V as big as they are.

Even if so, the voltage rating shouldn't have much effect beyond their being grossly over-rated.

But I believe that they are rated at 25V because they're all over the place, many different sources. If they were mis-labeled, you'd think either the Mfgr. or the suppliers would have alerts on it.

Maybe I now own the World's 1st EMP-proof Guitar Amplifier... !!

cheers!

cheers!

Prolly so. But in my experience, the only difference between a 25mfd/25VDC cap and a 25mfd/500VDC cap is the amount of electrolytic fluid. Thus, the size of the cap.

Anyhow, those 25/25 @ 25VDC caps will work fine, as long as you have the space. And if the extra size does = extra fluid, they will last forever.

I have some Mallory oil filled 35mfd/330VAC RMS rated non-polar motor run caps. I believe that the VDC rating is 1.44 times the VAC rating = 475VDC RMS, for motor run caps. Now, to find an amp chassis big enough...

Lightnin MN, I took a photo of both F&T caps. They weigh the same. Interesting issue. I'll post it on a DIY board.

I also sent a message to F&T. Got to üben mein Deutsch!!!
