I'm in the unfortunate situation of clearing out my parent's house. (My mom has moved to an assisted living facility). But in the process, I have taken all of my dad's tools and many of them were my grandfather's. You can't beat the quality of those old tools. One of the items was a heavy duty soldering iron. Should come in handy. My son likes to tinker with pick-ups

+1000

If he has a US-made vise, be sure to grab it. You can't find an American-made vise these days for less than around five hundred bucks.

Arjay,

US made Wilton vises are just so much better than any Chinese made vise I've seen. I copped mine from a mechanic that retired 20 years ago. That and the polishing lathe. They both do yeoman's work. You don't even think about either --- they always do the job.

That's about fifteen hundred bucks worth of vise, Steve.

That is, if you could even find one!

The bench grinder is a fine piece as well.

T2,

Thanks, it's definitely a work in progress. Picked up a pair of 6V6GTs at lunch today from Andrews Amp Labs so I can get a better idea of how the fixed bias is.
[begin shameless plug]The proprietor there is really a nice guy, and from what I hear, they do good work there.(no personal experience other than buying tubes today.) [end shameless plug]
I'll eventually replace them again as I acquire some NOS tubes.

Assuming you live where I think you do, looks like the weather isn't to great there right now. Used to live there myself.

No thanks necessary, you are doing all the hard work! If you are going to get some NOS tubes, might I suggest a pair of NOS JAN Phillips 6V6's. Great tubes and can take some real heat. I had a post about my 64 Princeton and great rectifier tube too. Check it out if you get the chance.

As for the weather...St Louis is the Gateway, and yeah the weather is too damn cold! I have about 7 more years or so left here before we retire back down to our adopted home state of Florida!

For this amp, I would use US made NOS 5Y3GT rectifier. Good NOS or slightly used ones are still a good deal. And their long life is well known.

The best are the JAN 5Y3WGT (aka: either 6106 or 6087). Bendix made the 6106 and GE the 6087 (many of these are re-branded under other manufacturers). Both are slow startup rectifers, like the GZ34/5AR4. I have several of these, along with good consumer NOS brands (GE, RCA, & Tungsol are the best 5Y3GT's). As well as 6V6GT's. Post me a Message on this site, if you are interested.

Consumer 5Y3GT's that I've had very good luck with. There are some Champ and VC that I redid 15-20 years ago, that have these rectifiers in them. And they still test very high. Stone cold reliable.
