A chance meeting at the Dr’s. office last week led me to the owner of this 1973 Silverface Princeton Reverb Amp.

The owner said he’s had it since ’81 and hasn’t used it much in the past year, so was considering placing it for sale on CL or eBay.

Owner lives just a short distance from me, so I arranged to go over and look at it. He said in 2010 he had it re-capped, had the orig. Blue label 10” Oxford (10J4-5B w/ correct date code 1973) rebuilt and re-coned and installed all NOS RCA tubes (5u4gb, 6V6GT, 12AT7, 7025) – says tubes have less than 10 hrs. on them.

Looked great, all tranny codes match, sounded really good. Visually, it’s an 8.5/10 (due to two nicks in the Tolex and non-orig. repro Footswitch). Also came with orig. Amp cover.

Functionally, it’s a 10/10. Sounds great, incl. Reverb w/ orig. tank cover. Plate Voltages measure 398/397 w/ Idle currents of 28.8/29.0 mA respectively.

Dunno whether this Oxford was simply one of the good ones, or whether Midwest Speaker just did an excellent rebuild, but I really like the Tone so I plan on keeping it.

After a little bit of wiggling, we arrived at a number we were both happy with, and I brought it home to add to the collection. Pretty excited to have it !

Cheers!

Nice grab...

Just to prove you can never have too many?

Seriously jealous...I've got to refocus on estate sales...

There are instances where a post-1964 Oxford will actually sound quite good once re-coned with quality, modern components. I've heard a few rebuilt 12L6's and 12T8's that nearly rivaled the tone of vintage Jensen C12N's. Nearly.

I really like this Oxford.

The place that did the rebuild has a great reputation, been around since the '50s, and I've had great luck with them in the past on several sets of audio speakers.

It has a seamed cone and possibly this is making a difference.

I know many replace the 10" w/ a 12" in the PR, but I like the 10" because of it's more focused projection. In a Condo, this is also a bit of a plus.

That said, since one of the easiest ways to change the Tone of an Amp is a speaker swap, I'll troll loosely for a nice Jensen C10N, and if a nice one comes along at the right price, I'll probably pick it up.

But it's not a priority right now, I'll just enjoy it as is because it's really enjoyable.

cheers!

An "N" would be overkill in that 12-watt amp. A C10Q will do quite nicely.
