Hi all...new to the forum, but I have a question and this seems like the place.

I play a Tele Bass and pedals through a 67 blackface Bassman with original Fender cab. I don't know a ton about the gear, except a friend convinced me it was what I needed for our church about a year ago. I absolutely love it and I'm trying to learn more.

We just upgraded our soundboard to Presonus digital, and we're moving towards IEMs and trying to eliminate stage volume. I've been asked to present options for getting the bass into the system. Currently, I use the cab as a stage monitor and mic it to the system.

The way I see it, I have a few options:

1) Continue as is, and add an isolation cabinet.
2) Add an active DI box with isolation cabinet, not 100% how this works, thinking I run from amp head to DI, out to system, with the Thru line going to the cab?
3) Same as 2, with an attenuator instead of DI.

Any ideas/suggestions would be very helpful!
Jeremiah

Welcome to the forums!

One of the things that you could do is either use a DI or mic to get your sound into the mixer; to keep the sound of your speakers out of the ambient mix, you could turn the speaker around towards you, or with a longer speaker cable, put the bass amp in another room and mic from there.

I'm recommending micing the cab as while a DI is normal for getting bass into a PA, if you like the sound of the bass through the Bassman amp and speakers, a mic is the right idea. Speaker cables can run a long way, so you could put that cab in another room and still have your sound...

With the DI and iso cab, you'd be giving 2 signals to the PA, one DI, and one of the mic'd cab. Signal would go bass>DI. DI would split to the amp and the PA; mic'd amp in the iso cab would then also go to the PA, where the mixer would have to align the two signals (DI will be slightly ahead) and may have to change the phase of one to avoid cancellation.

So I'd buy a longer speaker cable (cheap) before I invested in an iso cab for bass.

Other alternative instead of an attenuator would be a load box, similar to the PAlmer PDI-03 or or Two Notes Torpedo. These allow for line-level output to the PA with the right load on your Fender amp to use without a cab. How it sounds with bass compared to your cabinet is very subjective, but only you can tell if you can works.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!

Based on your suggestions, it sounds like using a mic may be the best option. I don't have a place to put the bass cab in another room, so I'll have to build/purchase an isolation cabinet. Any suggestions on where to get a custom made cabinet?

A friend recommended a Shure Beta 52 or AKG D112 mic. Does that sound right?

Thanks again
