Jupiter Red Astron Caps

What's the deal with these? Pretty spendy, but all USA-made w/ all US components. Suposedly pretty credible recreations of the old Astrons.

Was surprised that a Forum Search returned nothing on these. No Thumbs Up or Down.... nothing.

Looking to find suitable replacements for the cap job on my Deluxe.

Any thoughts?

cheers!

Pretty spendy. I like the yellow Jupiter Vintage caps. The "Red Astron" seemed to be targeting the tweed-tone era market. As this is when original Astron coupling caps were used.

I have no personal experience with the Red ones. I can vouch for the Yellow ones. Excellent caps.

Thanks for the reply.

Thanks !

I get that the Reds are supposed to emulate the 'Firecrackers' of the old Tweeds and the Yellows the Mallory Mustards of the Blackface era, but the Reds seem to more closely match what the schematic calls for - 400VDC not 600VDC (yellows).

Do you think there's going to be much tonal difference between them?

cheers!

Had old Gibson amp that wasnt worth fixing, I kept the Astron caps though, the 450, I dont know if caps that old can be trusted though, there's no bubble on the end.

There is not much initial difference between 400 & 600VDC rated caps. 600VDC ones will last much longer in circuits that are pushing 400VDC.

Thanks, I get that.

But the schematic says unless specified, all caps s/b rated to 400VDC and the circuits these will be in are 170VDC and 250VDC respectively, so there's already ample 'overkill' with the 400s (Red).

The main difference between Red & Yellow, besides voltage rating, is that the yellows are made of Aluminum Foil with Polyester(Mylar) Film Dielectric, while the Reds are case potted tinfoil and mylar. Will there be much tonal difference between them? If so, which is 'better'?

cheers!

Damn, I hate when the site dumps your post (when you hit the Submit button)..

Ok.. the reason why Fender used 400VDC rated coupling caps in the 1950's, is that 600+ rated ones were very expensive. As soon as manufacturing technology got better in the early 1960's --- most amp manufacturers went to 600VDC rated caps. Except in their lower cost, lower powered models.

Look at the Bassman (5F6-A) schemo. There is 230-240VDC placed onto the anodes of the phase inverter. If the coupling caps leak any DC above a few volts --- you are going to get a ruined 5881 signal grid. I would never put a 400VDC rated cap here.

The long-term stability is greater in higher voltage rated caps. Breakdown in any coupling cap will inevitably lead to failure to the next stage tube. This is one of the reason tubes get noisy. You keep replacing 12AX7 in one stage. And it keeps failing. Even though the plate voltages and cathode voltages are ok --- in that stage. Measure the coupling cap of the previous stage --- lo-&-behold it's leaking a lot of DC.

Bubble are for old electrolytics caps , don't you talk about signal cap , not electolytic ?

Hey guys,

FYI, I spoke to someone at Jupiter Condenser and they said that all their Red Astrons are rated at 600VDC.

Said they only mark them 400VDC for a correct Vintage Look.

Also, said the difference between the Reds and the Mustards is that the Mustards have a little 'warmer' sound.

cheers!

Yea, sorry I meant electrolytics.

Wow! This is the first time I've heard of a company placing lower voltage value to maintain a "vintage look." I wonder about liability...

The Jupiter Yellow caps have a great tone, right out of the box. Very quiet. Smooth tone. These & Beeswax have been the caps I've used in critical spot for amps for the last few years.

Caps I like for coupling:

Jupiter Vintage Yellow

Russian mil spec K40Y-9

Dynami-caps

http://www.partsconnexion.com/capacitor ... micap.html

Mallory-150

NOS Sprague Black Beauties

NOS Mallory brown caps

These caps maintain much of the vintage tone (for me). And have good life expectancy. I've been using the Jupiters, K40Y-9, and Dynami-caps for the last dozen amp re-dos.

As usual... YMMV

Can't beat Jupiter caps. Both Red and Yellow are wonderful-worth every penny.

Yup. The Yellow Vintage Jupiter's get as close to the original Blue MOLDED cap tone, as any cap I've tried. The Red Jupiter's maintain the tweed & woodie tone of the original Astron caps.

Their Beeswax cap are great for amps that are voiced a bit too "hot" or over-treble. I have used the Beeswax in input stages and PI stage with good results.
