Anyone try the NOS vintage Metal 6V6 tubes?

They're considerably lower priced than the glass bottles, yet the exact same tube.

I have heard some worry about heat dissapation, but actually, the metal can won't store as much heat energy as a glass tube. I suspect that if measured with an IR thermometer, they would probably be found to run a little cooler actually.

Tone may be an issue for some, but of course Tone is mostly subjective.

I may pick a pair up and try em.

cheers!

The metal-cased 6V6 is only good for about 250 VDC at the plates.

The B+ for a typical Deluxe or Deluxe Reverb runs 410 VDC.

If you get a good mil spec metal 6V6 (like Raytheon or Tungsol --- you can use it in Fender amps. I've seen some early woodies and tweeds with original metal cased TS or RCA's.

However, they tend to be microphonic. I would not recommend them, since there are so many good glass 6V6GTs out there.

BTW... metal cased gain stage octals can be some of the best to use in vintage pre-amp stages. They have a bit more sparkle than their glass counterparts. The RCA JAN-CRC 5693 is one of the best gain stage tubes I've heard. It subs for early Fenders that used the 6SJ7 in the input section.

Correct. Same with metal 6L6's. And the shell is often tied to the cathode. So be careful with attaching a grid stopper resistor from pin 1 to pin 5 --- as often done in glass 6V6G (and 6L6G) and later tube amps. In the glass tubes pin 1 is n/c.

With metal shell tube , never use pin 1 for voltage.

Hi -I recently tried a NOS vintage RCA metal can in my blackface champ and really liked the sound -warm and full- then a minute later I noticed smoke starting to emanate from behind the amp. Didn't wait long enough to diagnose whether the paint or oil was burning off of the tube exterior, or if it was coming from the transformer. All I know is that the tube was VERY HOT. -Luckily the amp still works fine with 6V6GT...
