Hello everyone,

I'm sorry that my first post is immediately one with questions , but I would love to get some input on the purchase of a 2ndhanded Silverface Twin Reverb.

So I was planning to buy a Fender Twin Reverb Reissue, to use it as a basic to build my sound around it with some fuzz and overdrive.

But I stumbled upon this silverface that costs only the half of what a new reissue goes for here.
For me , and since I live in Europe , this is a lot of money I might could save.

The guy asks about 1000 dollar for it , and the only thing that is "broken" are the sockets where the tubes are placed in. The amp still works.

He even gave the serial number :

A620039

The guy himself isn't able to state from which year the amp is.

Could anyone tell me if this is a good deal ? Will this amp hold his value, and is it as good as the reissues ? Will it also work fine with pedals?

Many thanks in advance!

Oh, and the guy gives a set of spair tubes with it.

Cheers,

It is a 1976 amp

In my opinion it is a more solid and well built amp than the reissue wich are made with printed circuit and some cheap parts( ? ) , but reissue may sound better
In America that is the price it worth in perfect working order , not more , not a deal if some socket are broken . Those 1976 silverface amps are not sough after than older Twin reverb . They are made by CBS and they are many mods that Fender amp user did not like.
It is a very heavy amp and too loud in my opinion
If you like the sound , a powerfull and heavy amp and if it work well why not

You'll need to know a qualified tech in tube amps to fix it

Many thanks in advance!

As Stratele mentioned, the amp is a '76 model seemingly in original condition (the speakers look to be the OEM Oxford 12T6's).

These amps can be bought here in the colonies for $500 to $675 depending on cosmetic condition and overall originality. The seller's asking price is over-optimistic, even "across the puddle".

They are very clean, very loud amps and also very heavy (I've owned several in the past few decades and still have a '78 model). Comparing them to a re-issue Twin Reverb, the vintage amp may be more reliable (if/when properly serviced) but I own one of those as well and it sounds quite similar to my silverface '78. If you do buy that amp, ignore the master volume control and the pull-boost switch and play the amp conventionally using pedals to develop and enhance your tone. Twin Reverbs are not known for any significant breakup, compression, or overdrive without the assistance of outboard stompboxes.

Hi guys,

thanks for the responses so far , appreciate it !
I could have done some more research myself now I think about it, sorry for that.

Talked about it with a fellow guitarplayer, who told me someone he know was selling his Fender 76 Twin also but asks 100$ more , but with the orange JBL D120F speakers.

Is this worth the extra money?
Couldn't find how much they are going with those speakers, and are those speakers actually better and keep their value better ?

Cheers,
Dimitri

The upgrade to JBL D120F's is definitely worth the added premium.

Every Twin Reverb I've ever owned (about a half dozen over the years) has been JBL-equipped. Most of my other amps were/are as well.

+1 I had one for over 30 years with no issues. as Arjay noted, leave the master volume on 10 and don't use the pull boost, just ignore it. Great amps in my opinion.

Alright,

by keeping the mastervolume at 10 , this will avoid trying to push the pre amp tubes ?

Essentially, yes.

But jacking the input signal up via the use of stompboxes will increase the gain thoughout the pre-amp stages and artificially produce some compression and overdrive.

Depends on where in EU you live, but I've seen a couple go for ~700€ here in Slovenia. My rhythm guitarist bought one for about 730€, if I remember correctly, and nothing was broken (only the tolex has a small - and I mean a very small - hole in it). This was less than a month ago. The amp was a 100W version (the seller first thought it was a 135W one, but I've seen also a 135W one on sale for around 700€).
I did see someone selling a 100W version for 990€, but I don't think it'll be sold. All in all, I'd say for a partly-broken amp the price is too much. If nothing was broken then yeah, that's probably the price you'll pay for it ;)
