Hi Everyone
Well my 78 Silverface Deluxe Reverb is going in to the tech to get serviced and capped.
but i must say i'm a bit nervous because i LOVE the tone i'm getting now.
It's a little noisy on start up , and when a note decay's it gets a bit noisy as well.
do you like think that could be a tube issue ?
Also do i risk losing my tone after i get it back from the shoppe ?
What do ya think ?

I think if your amp tech uses anything other than F&T electrolytics of 16ufd with an 85ºC rating under the doghouse, you should find a new amp tech.

Were it me, I'd ask for a complete diagnostic bench-check and written report. Prioritize the servicing requirements and proceed from there.

The filtering and biasing caps are a good place to start. Once the power supply is squared away then the amp's other symptoms can be addressed.

The power supply is the equivalent of a home's foundation -- if it's not plumb, square, and level, the rest of the structure is useless.

" It's a little noisy on start up , and when a note decay's it gets a bit noisy as well. "

This is a classic symptom of old, dried-out main filter caps. Sustain also loses its bite. Or has oddball harmonics riding on top of the notes.

Good luck with the recap job. Well worth it, for this classic amp.

Absolutely!

These vintage amps will still be earning their keep decades after a brand-new model sold this very day makes its final journey to a land-fill three or four years from now.

Or Sprague Atom

Kalzim7878,

You should know it the tech is qualified and honest BEFORE you live the amp there. After is too late . Take your time for a choice of a tech .

Lately I have been using Nichicon they where recomended by custom amp builder to me. Get them from Mouser. Good price on kits.

I'm boycotting Sprague ever since a production run of their electrolytic caps was released for sale that were either mis-marked or failed in-house QA/QC and were shipped to distributors and sold anyway. I'll buy them again but only if they:

A -- publically acknowledge the error, and:
B -- post a shotgun apology on every major guitar-amp forum (including this one)

Failing that, let them pound sand!

Arjay,

I've cut some recent made 20mfd/500VDC Sprague ATOM's and found a much smaller cap inside. These kinda looked Chinese, to me. It's been reported on other boards, of this issue with various ATOM's. Along with failure of new caps. Almost, never heard of in the days of orange Sprague ATOM's or Mallories made in USA.

You scrap a recent Sprague Atom to look inside ? Or it do not work even it is new ?

I see a photo of a Sprague with smaller cap inside on other post . Is it the truth ?

I have lots of new one at home ......How can I know what is inside ?

Last spring a client brought me his SRRI, complaining of odd LF overtones and "gritty-sounding" note decay. I'd previously re-capped it in 2012 with a new set of Spragues. After checking "the usual suspects" (power tubes, idle bias, possible microphonic pre-amp bottle) and finding nothing amiss, I pulled the doghouse and checked the electrolytics I'd installed a year previous. Both of the 100ufd reservoir caps actually measured 50ufd. After replacing them with new F&T's the amp bounced back, sounding like a Super Reverb should. Since then, I've made no further Sprague purchases and have tossed them under the bus. I don't need such aggravation.

Arjay ,

I understand your unfortunate experience with these capacitors but it happened once or not often.
If we were to boycott companies each time a product is faulty, we do not buy anything.

Starting with Fender products. How many times we read on the forum of problems with the guitars and amps?
So we do not buy Fender products anymore ?
