Hello everyone,
i'm a newbie when it comes to all things tube.
I have just purchased a 1978 deluxe reverb .
At last nights gig when i went off stand by , I notice a bit of snap crackle pop.
as the night went on and as the tubes warmed up the noise went away.
the first day I got it I cleaned the tube pins and that helped a lot.
any comments would be great.
Cheers

Kalzim7878, welcome to the Forum! :D

Great amp you have there. Have you checked the main power & bias supply filter caps? They should be replaced, if original or greater than 15-20 years old. Often, amps with power caps that are starting to dry out will make various noises on start-up --- that can go away once the amp is warmed up.

Also, check the idle bias on the 6V6GT's. Should also be checked if you redo the filter caps, change the rectifier, or change output tubes.

Good luck! Any photos? :) :) :)

Kalzim7878, you can inspect the caps in question, if you are able to remove the chassis of the amp from the cab. And know how to discharge caps, prior to inspection.

I believe the going rate should be $200-250 --- for a complete electrolytic cap replacement, involving the main filter caps, bias supply caps, and adjusting the idle bias. If needed, this R&R repair will help make the amp quiet and reliable, for a good long time.

I find that this is one of the few things needed in most Fender amps. And perhaps new tubes. The trannies in these amps are very good and rarely need replacing short of a catastrophic failure.

One other thing you may want to check... the fuse. Be sure the amp has the proper amperage fuse.

Good luck!

+1

Do not neglect inspecting the power-rail resistors either. Likely, they're just as old as the electrolytics. Since it's a '78 it should already have a grounded 3-conductor power cable -- make certain that the ground prong is present on the plug. If not, replace the plug with a modern equivalent. Set the rear-panel ground switch to the center position and leave it there.

Absent any other symptoms, probably safe to play but I would schedule the amp for a tuneup/checkup as soon as is practical.
