You are a lucky man (yeah that includes Mrs Lightnin) and the new amp.

What would you recommend?

I really like the sound of the Oxford and can't imagine a better sounding speaker.

But I'm not at all averse to finding a more common vintage speaker such as a Jensen to take the workload so I can mothball the orig. speaker.

cheers!

Not stone throwing here lightnin, if you like the tone, then that is all that matters, it's just Oxfords are not known for their great tone. Was thinking it could sound even better. I would go with a vintage C12N like Arjay stated, those are my favorite 12 inch Jensen. Just can't go wrong with them, and you should be able to find a vintage date correct one. By the way thanks for the amp porn especially since you just don't see too many Non Reverb Deluxes out there!

Hey.... ain't no thing...

I ask because I really don't know.

The Oxford sounds good, but in my limited universe, I accept maybe not the best.

It's sometimes a B*tch being at the bottom of the Learning Curve !

I'm willing to explore and have already researched yours and Arjay's suggestions.

Like I said, I will order a reissue harness and solder it to the alternate speaker. It's about a 5 min. swap that way.

cheers!

Congrats on a great score!

I would also recommend a vintage 60s Jensen C12N or C12NA (with the gold/brown Fender decal). Looks something like this

Image

I would never replace the C12NA in my DR.

For a speaker harness you can order one from Jay on ebay and ask him to add terminals to make speaker swap easy...

For new production speakers take a look at WGS speakers, sound way better than any Weber speaker I tried and closer to the original Jensens IMO.

I still have to get that matched pair of '66s re-coned. Perhaps when the right project comes along......

Well, pulled the chassis and all-in-all it looks pretty good inside. No signs there was ever any burning/melting/leaking. Trannys all look good, wiring in nice shape, boards not excessively warped.

see pics: 1967 Fender Deluxe Blackface Amp AB763

The 3-prong conversion was done properly, eliminating the Death Cap.

Some of the filter caps have been swapped as well as a couple resistors (found 1 just laying in the chassis !!). Hope it didn't just break loose - possible source of excess noise?

The main electrolytics seem to be the original mallory's though I think the #2 is leaking underneath, not from the end - note staining underneath it.

My Fluke decided to take a dive, so I can't really check any values.

A new one, along with new Coupling and Filter Caps will arrive next Tues. - F&Ts + some Sprague Atoms (supposedly NOS where F&T was not available).

While I sit and wait for Mr. Brownpants, I've cleaned up the Cab, polished all the brightwork, installed the Jensen, lubed the pots etc.

I'm a little nervous trying to chase down the noise issue because I've never done any Amp repair before. But the only game in town here for repairs has a terrible reputation, not to mention about a 90-day turnaround. So I can't believe I'm gonna be any worse. It's my amp, so I'll certainly show more care than those hacks would too.

I've done lots of auto wiring, starter/alternator rebuilds and prototype fabrication, so I know all the basics, just not how they apply to Amps. It's gonna be a fun learning experience.

Let me know what you think...

cheers!

DAAAYYYYAMMM...The inside is as clean as the outside! Very Sweet amp and I see you got the C12N...damn fine choice!

Waiting on parts was one of the hardest parts when I rebuilt the Bantams...watching for Mr. Brown is like watching a pot of water and waiting for it to boil!

I am sure either Arjay, Beemer, or Art will be along soon and willing to walk you through what to look for to chase down the noise.

Enjoy the amp, it's certainly a KEEPER!

Yeah, two of the main filters cap (right and left ones) appear to be leaking. Good idea to replace any paper bound lytics with metal/plastic covered ones. Very nice looking amp. Must be atone monster. Enjoy!

Lightnin MN, congrats of the beautiful amp. :D

How would you compare the old Oxford with the new Jensen (tone vise)? :?:

Well, can't really tell yet because there's a noise issue and the Jensen is so much more efficient than the Oxford that it hisses like crazy, intolerably so in fact. The less efficient Oxford doesn't pick the 'noise' up at all.

Even though the Oxford is the lesser of the two, an Oxford, not as nice as mine, just went at auction for $225, probably a collector wanting it for originality. I may auction mine, or just mothball it in case originality becomes a value issue in future.

I plugged the Jensen as a stand-alone into the ext. jack of my Peavey Delta Blues 115, and it sounded great... and was quiet. So the noise is in the amp itself (as it usually is).

I already know I have some Caps to replace and possibly some resistors, so once that is done (waiting for them to arrive), presumably the 'noise' issue will be corrected and I'll try it again.

If not corrected, I'll have to put on my Detective hat and trace everything until I find the source.

I'll report back once all is done.

cheers!

Some possible sources......

Tubes

DC leakage from a bypass or coupling cap

Tired carbon-comp resistor(s) somewhere in the pre-amp

Pretty sure replacing the main filter caps and maybe the two resistors under the doghouse will reduce most of the background hiss. Usually this kinda hiss is not changed by volume control settings.

Good luck! Keep us posted. :D

I'm not very technical myself, but this doesn't make sense ..

Cheers :D
