How's the 6G2 Princeton sounding, Bill?

Arjay,

I think you have me confused with another thread. I 'm still working on the 6G2 Princeton, but I have other obligations that I have to fulfill so it is a slow process. Rest assured, I will post pictures and other info when I'm ready. Some pictures that I had not intended to be posted have already been posted by someone other than me, so I have been silent with any further updates. I appreciate your help with the speaker and knobs, but I don't want to detract from Klunkerbill's thread here. When I'm ready, I will post a before and after thread on the 61 Princeton, and start a new one on the 69 Bandmaster that will be next on my list.

Thanks to everyone on here,
vinyl (Bill)

Sorry,

This is actually Jerry's thread. Apologies, Jerry. I work for the power company here in Atlanta, things have been a little upside down here lately. Hope to be back on track here soon.

3 more years to retirement, woohoo!

My opinions are relatively unclouded by any actual knowledge, thanks.

I just found an old Thomas organ sitting on the side of the road for the trash. I took the speaker out of it. It looks like it might be a good guitar speaker as well. I don't know how many watts it is. The numbers on it are 12j4-31 465-108. It looks like the one posted here except mine has an extra cone in the center of it. Can anyone help me find the watts and ohms this thing is? I'm guessing somewhere around 4-8 ohs. @ 25 to 40 watts. Thanx.

Your 12J4 was made by Oxford in the 8th week of 1961. It's the type of speaker that Fender often used in a Princeton or Princeton Reverb amp and is good for about 20 watts but no more. The "extra cone" you mention is what's known as a "whizzer" and is intended to extend the HF response of the speaker -- a pretty common feature of drivers used in organs. You'll need a meter to determine the impedance.

Thanx for your reply retroverbial. While I'm here I have a few questions on speakers. if I have 2 100watt speakers at 8 ohms and I hook them together in a series, does that make the ohms go up to 16 or down to 4 ohms? I forgot. And does that mean I can run a 200 watt amp in to them, or does just stay at 100 watts? same thing again, if I have 1 speaker that's 100 watts and 1 that's, say, 25 watts. can I run a 125 watt amp into them. does parallel or series make a difference on this method? Thanx for any help with this.

Assuming two 8Ω speakers:

In series......8 + 8 = 16
In parallel......8 + 8 = 4

As for power dissipation in your first scenario -- theoretically the pair *could* handle 200 watts wired in either of the above configurations. However, with that much output power available there isn't much of a safety margin.

The second scenario is a bit more murky. You might get away with it under the specified parameters when wired in series but in parallel (assuming each driver has an identical impedance) the load will be equally split between each of the speakers, ie: 62.5 watts for each of them. Thus, the 25-watt driver would likely fry.
