I recently purchased a 1966 Fender Champ. I asked the seller if it has the original speaker and he said after much research he could not come to a defiitive conclusion.

Here is a link to the picture.
What do you guys think?

Definitely not.

The OEM speaker for most vintage Champs, Vibro Champs, and Broncos was an alnico Oxford.

OK thanks. Is there a way to find out what speaker it is? I guess I would have to take it out and look.

If the speaker currently in your Champ has an 8-ohm coil, your 6-watt amp is only putting out about 3½ to 4 watts.

These single-ended designs require a 4-ohm (actually a 3.4 ohm) speaker for optimum coupling.

If you're interested in taking it back to spec.... you should be able to find a vintage Oxford. They don't cost a lot, but as you will read elsewhere, they really aren't that favorable. Many seem to get replaced. Putting a Jensen or a Weber in the amp would be an improvement over the original Oxford and far better than what is in it now.

Congrats on the new amp.

I put a Weber Signature series in my 74 Champ and it sounds great. I also installed a 1/4" inch phone jack so I can run my Champ through extension cabs with my Weber Z-Matcher.

A painless, transparent, and totally reversible mod that's well worth the minor amount of time and labor involved. With parts in hand (basically, a ¼" phone jack) it takes all of twenty minutes......ten minutes to remove the chassis (and re-install upon completion), five minutes to heat the soldering iron, and five minutes to remove the RCA phono jack and install the replacement.

Looks like an Atlas Soundolier loud speaker in there.

To determine that you'd need to check the speaker's DCR with a multimeter to ascertain that it's the correct 4-ohm impedance.
