Guys, Im about to aquire a BFPR, owner says it is a 65, but might be 64, what are the tell-tell signs , besides dating trannys and all that. This dosnt have the white knobs like some, and no Fender logo....could this be a later 64. I know how amp porn is here, wish I had some to post of this....what are your thoughts?...

Dating the components by correctly deciphering and interpreting the EIA codes only gives you a ball-park guestimate as to when a particular amp was "born". But within the chassis you will likely find an ink-stamped date adjacent to the power tranny and/or bias-supply board that will provide definition. As well, there may be a date code marked somewhere within the cab's interior. The reverb tank (if original) will also provide clues.

Princeton Reverb's did not acquire a logo on the baffle board until mid-year 1965 (as with the Champ, Vibro Champ, non-verb Princeton, non-verb Deluxe, and Deluxe Reverb).

White knobs are for Princeton not PR.

IMO 64 and 65 look same for cosmetic .

Only way is to look to date many parts ; transformer , pots , chassis.

If only one part is a 1965, the amp can't be a 1964

True, but only until the the 6G2 circuit was superceded by the AA964 revision in September of 1964 (with its updated tone stack featuring separate bass and treble controls). Standard blackface-era snowman knobs were used on this subsequent non-reverb model.

You seem to know a lot more than me on this subject. I bow ( is the right word ? ) and will continue to follow this topic to learn with you.

Mercí, mon amí.

But we all learn from one another here, m'sieur.

Only Mr. Leo himself rates a bow.

hogrydr,

You are better off with the Celestion. Original speaker was prolly an Oxford. Nothing to write home about. I'm sure you can find OEM ones on EBay. In case you want to seel it with OEM stock.

+1

The post-1964 Oxford's (of all persuasions) were singularly unremarkable in tone and timbre. If the Celestion is not your cup of tea you might try finding a Chicago-made Jensen C10R or C10Q. The alnico CTS as used in Super Reverb's is also a tasty-sounding driver.

Vintage OEM Gibbs/Hammond reverb tanks as used in Fender amps were marked with a date code formatted thus......

Image

Deciphering this one reveals it was manufactured in the 44th week of 1967 (it's the tank in my all-original '68 Deluxe Reverb).

AFAIK, only Gibbs and Hammond tanks were used in vintage Fender's. I have no idea about the Accutronics and what markings they may have.
