Hello everyone,

My name is Tim and (proud) owner of the amp mentioned above.
I bought the amp in 2002 when we formed a band with an animal on drums and I needed some more punch to get over the snare and cymbals :-)
You can see the amp in action in this video we once made in our garage for about 100 usd :-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBIE4SrPxYU

However, it seems that my rocking days are over. The drummer moved to London and we now play a bit more silent and bluesy music. So I'm thinking of selling my Dual showman.
But I just can't figure out how much it is worth because there is a bit of a story to it.

The person I bought it from bought it new in '73 when he formed a band with his brother and friends and played about 4 times a week (back then there was live music in every bar I guess).
2 months after purchasing the amp, his brother dies in a car accident and the poor man never touched his gear again. The amp was stored in a heated room untill I bought it in 2002, 30 years later.
So the amp is in near-mint condition (it was mint when I bought but although I took a lot of care with it, moving it around for about 150 times left some minor marks on it).
But more, it is absolutely 100% original. No lamp, speaker or screw has ever been changed.
The cabinet has the 2 orange JBL's.
When I bought it, the local music store adviced me to change the lamps etc to be sure not to have it fail during performing, but I thought I would take it as it came. And nothing ever happened. Still doing a great job.

So does this add any extra value? Or is it just Dual showman number 1001 I have to sell off for about a 1000 USD? If yes, I'd rather store it again for another 30 years :-)

Is see a lot of good condition showmans on the net, but when you start reading, always something has been changed, tolex, speakers, lamps....

At the left side of the amp, the wood of the casing has split (stored too dry..?) which has created a small tear in the vinyl covering. I didn't do any research, but maybe this is something that occured now and then?

Any info is appreciated.
Kind regards,
Tim

Not too much love for the 70s silverfaces with the master volume I'm afraid. People try to buy them cheap to blackface mod them.

And in the case of a DSR there is no clear path back to "blackface" since one never existed. It's closest relative in that regard is the AB763 Twin Reverb. Doable, but the MV control presents a few problems. As well, nobody wants to drag around a big-box Showman enclosure. They might've made sense thirty or forty years ago but they have little appeal to anyone today save for a collector. They're a PITFA to load and transport and frankly, not that efficient in terms of speaker performance. Better to put the chassis into a head shell, and install those D130F's into a pair of smaller and less-unwieldy cabs. Great for a pedal-steel player or someone with a Rhodes 88 piano.

Haha, definitely true about the transportation issue. But still looks great on stage :-)
Then I guess I just keep it as decoration in my office :-)
Thanks!

Either one of those would cover forty acres! 8)

If it was museum-quality mint condition, being all-original would add a bit of value. (It still wouldn't be super-valuable -- as mentioned previously, huge heavy loud amps are out of favor nowadays.) But with a few dings and a crack, being all-original doesn't add any value.

In fact, for a player's condition amp, having the original electrolytic capacitors is a minus. Those dry out over time and can cause big problems if they fail -- it's generally considered prudent to replace them every 10~15 years. They'll actually go bad sooner when the amp sits unused for long periods.

If by "lamps" you mean valves/tubes, those don't wear at all when the amp isn't being played. The '70s was the end of the "golden age" for valves/tubes -- they were much more reliable/durable than anything being made today. You can expect to get many thousands of hours of service out of the power tubes, and more than that out of the preamp tubes.

Instead of just storing it for another 30 years, you might consider getting it recapped and buy a smaller, lighter, more portable speaker cab for it. With a Twin Reverb size speaker cab you'd have a fairly practical amp that still has some of the best clean sounds ever.

One of Avatar's 2 x 12 enclosures would be ideal for this purpose.

The master volume is a problem as far as resale value, but they are great amps. I'd keep it stock-head and cabinet together. So many amps have been hacked that buyers will pay top dollar for old, untouched amps. Put it on Craigslist or whatever and ask what you think is fair.

Great picture of Retroverbial!! But it seems the tolex left under isn't the original one... ;-)

I agree with krankster and keep it original. It sounds great as it is and don't have to drag it around anymore for gigs anyway. I bought a VOX AC 30 for that (is it ok to mention this here...? )

About the volume this amp produces. It indeed goes loud as hell, but if our drummer started going loose I couldn't here myself at all anymore, even standing in front of it. No Kidding! So we used in ear PA. Protects your hearing and gives a great sound.

Your AC30 is likely more practical for the majority of today's venues. Keep your Dual Showman Reverb around for when you play those open-air outdoor festivals in Hyde Park.
