It might even simply be a poor solder joint.

I would whip out that DVM and do some voltage measurements with the amps on & comparing them to the schematic. The old wooden chopstick test maybe good, too. Tap the circuit's components with amp on, speaker connected. Listen for noise or signs of bad contacts. I clip the DVM onto the B+ to look for jumps in voltaga readings when doing this test.

Remember, amp is on. So keep free hand off the chassis and use a WOODEN chopstick. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Using wooden chopsticks, he might even learn that wood can conduct electricity.

You might try loosening the eyelet board from the chassis and inspecting the underside to ascertain if one of the solder points is contacting the steel chassis itself and grounding out a signal or a critical voltage. Do the same for the bias supply's tag board. The phenomenon is not common but I've seen it occur a time or two.

Thanks Retroverbial. I'll check that out.

How this can happened ? There is a isulation borad between chassis and eyelet board.

Be carefull if you lift the eyelet board , wiring dress should return at is place , if not you'll have some noise.

OK. Thanks. I'll be careful.

DB, if any components were replaced without desoldering, then the dreaded stalagtites can cause some havoc. Like Arjay suggested, you can loosen the top eyelet board, raise it enough to make sure nothing has poked through the bottom insulator board. I like to carefully slide some type of material( plastic, stiff vinyl, or the like between the boards). But this is not done forcefully, there are connecting wires running underneath the top board!!! Shaking the chassis and blowing out(computer air cleaner) any loose solder slag between the boards should do the job. Basically, you want to make sure that there is no, unintended, contact between the top board and the chassis, and that all under board wire runs are secure. Then you're on to the arcing problem, as the guys have suggested. Yeah, I know ... too much info!! JMO Art

I seen this more than a few times. Caused by pushing a cap or resistor lead through both boards. Then, soldering the beejeebers outta the eyelet. Such that the solder flows through the two boards and make a blob on the bottom of the insulating board.

Yeah, for sure!!! Louis, made the great point, of over exuberant- yet under skilled, part replacement individuals. I just used too many words!! Art

How can a cap or resistor lead go throught the insuslating board ? There is no holes and it is hard like a piece of wood ?

I am willing to give you the Benefit of the doubt but I'm very skeptical. It does not seem realistic to me

I've seen it happen more than a few times. Some leads, like those of the 600VDC rate SBE Orange Drops are pretty hefty. When you heat the joint, it softens the board a bit. And with those eyelets that have a lot of leads going into it --- I think some techs really honk on the component they are inserting.

You can tell by clipping the DVM to a voltage read-point and pressing on the circuit board. The voltage will drop. See this in the gain stage circuitry that has a lot of connections.

Thanks for feedback guys. When I get home tonight I plan to take a peek and see what is under there. I'll keep you posted. I've been playing this amp for years since the last "tech visit" but I guess it could take awhile for a lead to finally work its way through and make contact. I'm doubting that this is what has happened but since I am out of other ideas I am willing to check into all ideas. :D Thanks

I ran into this problem with the bassman head i got that had the wrong Output Tranny in it, who ever had "fixed" it had used tons of solder on each eyelet, I would use my solder sucker and have to disassemble it after each eyelet.
It caused many noise issues untill I was able to clean out all of the eyelets and get good solder joints on them.
I learned the importance of a Good solder sucker !
