I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I get barely any sound at all (no guitar signal at all) ...just a very light pop-pop-pop sound. Happens on either channel. I have checked/swapped out all tubes. I suspect I have a bad cap. I am well aware of discharging the entire board before doing anything. Does it sound like one of the filter caps? Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks

Hi DBerti,

The most likely suspects are the tubes. "Checking" the tubes won't always show a bad one, replacing with known good tubes is the only sure way to know. Try replacing the rectifier tube, and/or the PI tube and/or output tubes. If not the rectifier, PI, or output tubes you should use a meter and check your DC supply voltages and compare to those listed on the schematic.

Is the speaker plug fully seated into the output jack?

Pop pop should mean speaker is plug and amp is alive . You may hear little hum with volume at ten .

1- Did you ? Why you suspect filter caps ? Too early in trouble shooting to think filter caps are defective . Right now is not the issue. I never see a amp not working because filter caps. Amp may play poorly but it play.

2- What is the story of this amp ? Tell us more . Did he work before ? Any mods inside someone do ?

You have to check some power supply voltage . Did you know how ? Or resistors in B+ power supply broken ( open) .

Are you sure you try know good tubes ? Tube tester is not reliable for that.

Can you post some photos , close up inside the amp . More photos than less.

Caution ; lethal voltage in tube amps

Thanks for all the replies, guys. Yes. The speaker is definitely fully plugged in. To give more history (per your request). This is my main amp and I play it almost every day. It was working fine...until it stopped working. The amp is not currently being moved so it has been stationary in my music room in the basement. Only mods were a 3-prong power cord, and (see below) I did discover Sprague Atoms...so looks like filter caps have been replaces somewhere along the way.

Earlier, I suspected filter caps only because I thought I had read somewhere that the motor-boating sound is caused by filter caps. Not sure if that is what I am hearing or not but that is why I suspected them. Anyway, I have since pulled the amp apart, discharged it and opened it up. There are already Sprague Atoms there. I have had the amp about 17 years. Somewhere along the way one of the techs must have puts those in. They all look to be in good shape (visually). So, I feel you are right that I jumped the gun on suspecting those.

I will take some pictures per your request. But based on the responses so far I am now suspecting my power tubes or rectifier tube. The pre-amp tubes have been swapped out so I am pretty sure it is not them. I don't have spare power/rectifier tubes so looks like it is time to get a set - at least to rule that out or to have a backup set. The power tubes are RCA (original, perhaps?) and the rectifier is a Mullard.
The problem is that I lost my local amp guy so I may have to take a shot of biasing this thing if it ends up being tubes. (Any suggestions of reliable tube dealers would be welcome. I got my recent 12AX7 and12AT7 from TubeDepot ).

I will check voltages as suggested. Thanks guys.

btw... I do have a spare set of 6L6's for my Mesa Boogie - just no extra set of 6V6's. Can I put the 6L6's in just for testing purposes or would they damage something else?

Best to use a good set of 6V6GT as subs/test bed tubes. You can use 6L6GC to test for continuity--- only. As tone will be bad at 6V6GT bias levels.

Can you take some photos and post them? Esp of the circuit board, bias supply board, and caps under the doghouse. These along with a good continuity/voltage tests would prolly help find the issue(s).

Yes for testing , not for hour of playing because heater draw more current and it could damage your power transformer if not enough power full. But fee minutes for test it is OK

By the way if you want to know if your power transformer is powerfull and safe for 6L6 , put 6L6 and read heater voltage best is 6.3 volts AC . 6 volts and more is safe. Under 6 volts don't live 6L6 too long. Be sure you have a good voltmeter.

Caution ; lethal voltage in tube amps.

When you see a tech for repair , he must always give you old parts like he should do with your filter caps . Kees old parts in safe place , this can ad value if you sell your amp one day .

Bad filter cap do some "loud" hum at any volume , not motorboathing.

I have a number of pictures ready to upload. I'm just not seeing how to do so on this board.

Thanks for the tip on posting pics. I will upload a bunch. On the first one I placed a red arrow pointing to a 220K resistor that is only reading 168K, I know that is not the cause of my problem but is that far out of specs an additional problem?

The only thing jumping out at me are the incorrect filter-cap values -- they should be 16ufd, not 20 as installed.

Did you lift one leg of that resistor to ascertain its actual value or measure it in situ?
