Just bought a 1983/84/85 (not sure which year) Twin Reverb II amp for $500. Everything works except for two scratchy pots (vol and reverb). The speakers say "Special Design for Fender" with blue labels on the magnets. Anyone know what they might be? Tolex and amp cab are in great condition. I thought I was buying a Twin Reverb, but when I went to pick it up, surprise! No Vibrato! Had never head of a Twin Reverb II before, but played it - loud as hell, reverb sounded great! Did I get a good deal here? what would be acceptable replacement speakers? I play rock/blues. I'll get a pedal for the Tremolo (Boss TR-2?). Any info on how to get overdrive tone out of this amp would be appreciated.

Do the speakers look like these? 12-inch EV Deluxe. Pretty good speakers. High efficient variety.

Speakers during that era were likely Eminence or Rola. EIA date codes (if known) would confirm.

Five bills is considered an "average" deal.

You'll need pedals up front for any kind of OD or distortion -- even dimed, this amp remains relatively clean.

Speakers should be Eminence like my '84 2x10 Concert which is basically half of the Twin II.
Here is some info I had on them...
http://www.stratopastor.org.uk/strato/a ... nders.html

These amps have Volume, and separate Gain and Master Volumes, and with a mid boost pull switch, you won't get marshall gain out of em, but you can get some very nice grit and distortion out of channel 2. I used my concert for gigging for five years in a classic rock and blues band and only used an overdrive (not distortion) pedal with it. Maybe the Twin II is a little cleaner, but they are well built solid amps and the last of the point to point hand wired amps.

Also a little trick with these amps, is plug a short chord (pedal chords work nice) from the input to output in the effects loop and then crank the effects loop output knob this brings in an extra gain stage for more distortion.

+1

Jumpering the effects loop jacks brings both halves of V6 into the signal chain which adds a cascaded gain stage. The cable used should be fully-shielded to minimize spurious noise.

Hopefully we hear back from the OP to know if this worked for him to bring in enough distortion. Some pictures would from him would be great too!
