That typical Super Reverb sound?

Is it because of the 4x10 alnico speakers?

I'm making a custom amp at the moment and i am really going for that Super Reverb sound..

Not all Super Reverbs were factory-equipped with alnico speakers. The first iterations released in late '63 were fitted with ceramic Jensen C10R's (periodically, C10Q's). They sounded great. Shortly thereafter, ceramic Oxford 10L5's were also introduced -- some sounded good, some less so. It wasn't until around 1966 that the CTS alnico appeared as a standard Super Reverb driver. And coincident with those, CTS's ceramic version of the same speaker showed up (albeit in somewhat lesser numbers). Both versions of the CTS ten were a superb sonic fit with the Super Reverb platform.

Alright..

So to sum it up: It's the 4x10 configuration that makes the Super sound super? 8)

Thanks for the info! Really appreciate it!

It's the basic-and-original AB763 architecture coupled to the gonzo-sized output iron in conjunction with the 4 x 10 speaker array.

And lets not forget the Reverb in this amp. Every SR I have ever played had Great Reverb, in fact I have NEVER heard a SR with weak or bad reverb.

The GZ34 rectifier coupled to those 4 X 10 inch speakers helps give this amp it's unique tone. If your SR has a 5U4GB rectifier, replace it with a GZ34/5AR4 and you'll immediately hear the difference.

Beemer, can you just swap the tube or do you need to re-bias in some way? Also would this same arrangement of swapping out the 5U4GB work in my Bantam?

My apologies to the OP...not trying to Hijack your post.

The voltage from a 5U4GB will be slightly less than a GZ34 (both equal life). So, you should re-bias the amp with every rectifier change (even between same types --- with different life strength).

Agreed - and I've played through and have heard many.

The SR also runs at 2 ohms and has a hefty OT-lots of punch.

Plus, the four speakers can add or subtract from certain resonate or harmonic frequencies --- as really, no two speakers are truly identical in frequency response. At least, compared to a single driver.

I have the SR and a VLR (both are loaded with 1970's vintage CTS 10inch speakers). And the harmoinc signature and sustain is different, esp in mid to high frequencies. The bass is obviously better in the SR.

Both amps have different tonal signatures. Both amps are running NOS Mullard GZ34, the SR running BP RCA 6L6GC. And the VLR running GE pink based 7581A.

No surprise there -- the SR has 25 more volts hitting the plates than does a VLR. And the SR's output tranny dwarfs the iron in the VLR.

Last week I mod a Super Reverb silver face , shematic close to AA1079 . Customer don't like the reverb sound . I mod it to a Blackface AA763 . Now the reverb is a real Fender reverb . Just few resistors to replace and one capacitor in tremolo / reverb channel.

CBS put other (wrong) resistor value . I don't know why .

I've seen that periodically with the silverface amps -- most prevalent with those built after 1972. I don't know if it was a case of a wiring modification made on the production line or an assembly tech who happened to inadvertently grab a part of the wrong value.

The one I mod is a 1968 . It was built like a '70 CBS , nothing to do with Black Face. I thought 68 are real Black Face .

Now not only the reverb sound good but all the amp have a better tone .
