No, give it to your son! He will appreciate old amps if you do, and can you please get your son to do a sound sample? Btw he will appreciate the amplifier If he is a guitar player

My son has requested first chance to play it once we have a professional 'bring it back to life' (we don't even know for sure, it may actually be playable as is but we're not chancing it) but he understands this is not the kind of thing he's going to really appreciate and he said he'd live in mortal fear of what we'd do to him if he damaged it :D

Tubes can be replaced, and caps can be replaced. Just take it to a good tech once he accidentally damages it, it's only an accident, so don't smack him or anything, my first experience holy with a tube amp I accidentally didn't wait for it to warm up and it dropped in volume once I turned it on, teach your son about how to turn on a tube amp, here's how you do it

1. Plug amp into the wall
2. Plug your guitar in
3. Turn the POWER switch on, not the standby, but the power switch
4. After it warms up turn the amp on using the standby switch as I mentioned before, if it's a Fender amp these are at the back, do yeah let your son use it on the Road, and if he is a guitar player (guitars have 6 strings) or if he is a bass player (basses have 4 strings) don't plug a bass into it because it can damage the speaker, plug a 6 string electric guitar into it, if he is a guitar player, let him fiddle around with the controls on the front of the amp, let him play with the vibrato, I love hearing kids hear the cleanness and vibrato of a Fender amp, and if you want you can use the footswitch to turn the vibrato on and off, and the reverb on Nd off, plug the left jack of the footswitch into the REVERB pedal input, the right jack of the footswitch into the TREMOLO pedal input, your son may love this amp, if not you can send it to me for the cost of shipping, and I'd be happy to pay you the price of what you bought it for, even, I'd love this amp myself ! :)

Susan,

How long has the amp been sitting around, unused? By the Aluminum oxide patina on parts of the metal --- it may have not seen AC in awhile. May want a tech ramp up the amp, on first fire-up. This could help keep the amp from issues, down the road.

I talked to Blackie Pagano in NY yesterday. I'm going to make an appointment for him to do just that - bring it "to life" slowly and gently. Based upon some of the feedback I received, there appear to be two schools of thought: 1) Don't do anything to it to modernize it for playing. It appears some people want to put this on a shelf as a time capsule and never play it - an investment and sell when the market increases. 2) Modernize it and use it. I've heard estimated values of 2500 to 3500. Some say sell it on ebay, some say find a collector through one of these sites who won't chop it to pieces (I prefer that option - I hate ebay). In either case, I'll be in the 800-1000% ROI range. I've developed a silly attachment to the thing now that I've trekked it all over the house and researched the bejezus out of it. I sort of wish I learned to play the guitar instead of the violin so I could enjoy it. Oh well...

Susan,

I'd replace the parts that are no longer doing their job (like electrolytic caps). Oh, you can keep the old ones in a baggie, for a future buyer. Get the speaker reconed or look for a good new replacement. New tubes. Biased correctly. And play the darn thing.

I can't understand why ppl would buy a great amp like this and put it into a closet. Pretty hard to enjoy the tones with the darn thing stuffed behind the vacuum cleaner.

But then, I can't understand ppl that buy great vintage guitars and hang them on the wall --- like a painting or a tapestry.

I know a guy that has a real 1959 LPS hanging on his living room wall. I would pull it off and tune it up every time I went over to his house. He had a heart attack each time. He never invites me over anymore.

That guitar hasn't seen a patch cord in ten years. :(

+1

Unless your name is Eric Clapton or such, guitars and amps make a lousy investment. If you need the money, get the amp in working order and sell it. But if you do, sell it to someone who will use it for what it is and not just stick it behind a pane of glass.

Just replace the electrolytic caps and the paper caps, and get it as original looking as possible, and install a new 3 prong cord, I tend to prefer 2 prong cords on old amps, I love smelling the tubes in my Vox while playing, it is a freaking joy to do that and I can smell them in the air too! I may be coming up with a tube smelling addiction, or its just my inner geezer kicking in or something, but keep it as original as possible and these amps usually distort around 8 or so, its not because of failing components, its just natural tube distortion, your son may like it, I like it in my Vox, and I fail to see why you would want to modernize it and use it? Keep it original as possible and replace only the electrolytic and paper caps, and maybe a few resistors too

Just to be clear, by 'modernize' I mean I would convert it to a 3-prong power wire for the sake of safety. Other than replacing old/worn parts, I would try to keep it as original as possible.

Hello Susan, After blackie Pagano has seen your amp could you let me know how it went as I am looking for an Amp tech to work on my vintage fender, NYC is a little far for me but if he is good and reasonable $$$ wise I just may make the trip and maybe wait for him to go over it as he says on his web site "Please note that for all common vintage amplifiers, repairs typically require 1 hour and almost never exceed 1.5 hrs billed labor, even in cases of multiple problems. "
Thank you

So you are already familiar with the care and feeding of stringed instruments. Learn to play guitar. (Deluxe Reverb also makes a great violin amp) 8)
