This morning, I went to a house auction and ended up buying a Fender amp because it looked really old and was in brand new condition with all the cords, a foot pedal, a cover I plugged it in and it turned on. The only thing goofy about it is that there is a white powder covering the glass tubes. The guy former owner apparently played accordion for a hobby and his accordion was bid on furiously but no one wanted the amp so I bid against another guy for a bit and won it. I thought about giving it to our son who's plays guitar but now I'm checking around on the web and thinking that this might be worth something and giving it to a 22 year old is not a good idea. So, before my husband kills me, I'm wondering what I bought and what it would be worth and is it ok to 'test it out' by plugging in one of our son's guitars or should we wait to have it looked at? Thanks for any help you can provide. http://m923.photobucket.com/profile/ssusans?pbauth=1_uLEBonVPfaLdh1h3YMYz2a38luFx3Hy%2BwIe25BRRdP%2Bl7p%2FscAJPVDYBQrbnRWmEH%2FKc8kJguTYlUYEwmF9%2F3EUpvddAI3tzg6V05DDGEenmXFbUv2Ffkjv%2FQZ%2B7yqIrI%2Bgk36ROXlOqjdJMwW6b17wko8uoDxeogxf5l0E%2F3yw%3D&pbauth=1_uLEBonVPfaLdh1h3YMYz2a38luFx3Hy%2BwIe25BRRdP%2Bl7p%2FscAJPVDYBQrbnRWmEH%2FKc8kJguTYlUYEwmF9%2F3EUpvddAI3tzg6V05DDGEenmXFbUv2Ffkjv%2FQZ%2B7yqIrI%2Bgk36ROXlOqjdJMwW6b17wko8uoDxeogxf5l0E%2F3yw%3D

You bought a piece of junk. I'll take it off your hands for $50 plus shipping.

Seriously, it looks like you bought a vintage mid-60's Blackface Deluxe Reverb which could be worth a nice amount of money (I don't know the value but others here do). The white powder inside the tubes would indicate bad tubes. Before you go about playing the amp, you should take it to a good amp tech for a thorough examination. For something that old it should definitely have some service with several components (capacitors) and tubes replaced. The two prong power cord should also be replaced with a properly grounded 3-prong power cord and the ground switch disabled.

You walked away with quite a catch. Congrats. :D

Many thanks for the quick reply. I just remembered from a high school friend that anything Fender is sought after which brought me to this forum. I go for fiestaware and vintage VW parts come home with this. Now to find a 'guitar amp' specialist and hide it from our son. Thank you again, Susan

Susan, welcome to the Forum! :D

You have one of the Holy Grails of all vintage Fender amps. Like Bluesky stated, it is well worth having a GOOD tech goes through it -- before using the amp.

What's up with Photobucket? I can only access Mobile PB....

Tube chart markings seem to indicate the amp was shipped in February of 1966.

That's Photobucket's software jockeys, making another futile attempt at remaining "relevant" by hosing PB up (yet again). Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "SEE FULL WEBSITE". Then go to "FULL LIBRARY". That should restore "normalcy" to your account.

More pictures of the mystery amp innards. I'm in Northeast PA - anyone have any suggestions of an "amp tech" to take it to that can be trusted not to screw with anything? And to the two guys that are asking, no...the VW Cabby is not - nor will ever be - for sale :D

Susan, it looks like the output tranny maybe heavily oxidized. Can't really tell due to glare from the flash from camera. You have any better photos, maybe looking straight down onto the chassis of the amp?

Thanks!

You may not want to limit yourself to local amp tech's with that nice of a find. Not saying there couldn't be a qualified, honest guy around but it would be worth driving a few hundred miles + to have it done right.

These are all the authorized Fender amp service centers in PA. I know nothing about them, but it is a place to start. There are probably other independent techs, but you'll have to search them out. Maybe check with some local guitarists for recommendations.

How much did you pay for it? If so I AM JEALOUS!!! You have a great amp that is worth a fair bit over here! It'd be my dream to play an actual Deluxe Reverb and not a reissue! Of course I'd buy an SF Bandmaster off ebay :P Give it to the son and connect up the footswitch, the left one is reverb and the other one is tremolo, the left input goes to the REVERB pedal input, the right one goes to the TREMOLO pedal input, then see if the tremolo works, I love hearing classic Fender tremolo, they just sound so beautiful

Perusing the full-size pics, I give the amp a 9.0 (at least) for its overall cosmetic condition. The tube chart -- now definitively decipherable -- indicates a build date of August, 1966. The Oxford 12K5 speaker dates to the 17th week of that year and is likely original to the amp. The trannies seem to be correct and unmolested as well.

I'm sure your son will appreciate playing a $2500+ amp.

Congratulations on the "score of the century".

Pics with my better/non phone camera. Thanks everyone for the supportive words, history lessons, and recommendations. We'll probably head to NYC as most of the PA locations are in the south and west of PA and we're near the Poconos (closer to NYC). I seriously had no idea what I was buying. It will absolutely need to go to a collector who can appreciate what it is and take good care of it for it's next 50 years. The proceeds will help fund equipment for our son that is more road worthy of a bass player in a metal band :D

Oh, and I almost hate to do this to you guys, but with the buyers premium, I paid $335.
