I just bought a replacement capacitor and thought I ordered the correct one but the one they sent me is blue when the one I am replacing is orange. I was seeing if anyone here knows if the one they sent will work as a replacement. The original orange one says: 1KV 330 K Z5P. The replacement blue on says: 331K 3KV. I am replacing the small capacitor that is soldered across the power tube socket of a silverface Champ. Any advice is appreciated.

New mica disc caps are often made in China. And tend to be light blue colored. The original one is a US made one --- they are nearly always brown.

BTW --- brown mica caps last forever. So unless there is a good reason to replace the original, may want to just keep it.

Bedlam9,

I learned a lot about caps from a tech that re-aligns old high-end hi-fi tuners. Like Marantz Model 10B tuners. Or Ham transmitter techs.

In those units the pico-farad ceramic disc caps are critical to correct time-constants within the receiver's oscillation circuits. Really, only US CDE, Sprague, Mallory, or Euro made ceramic discs are used. As most Chinese made stuff drift all over the place.

Even in a tone stack tried NOT to use cheap Chinese made silver mica disc caps. These have been known to fail in a big way. Leading to the most odd effect on the tone pots. Like the treble knob becomes a pseudo-volume control. And the volume control works only to half max turn.

I've found the only good sources of quality silver mica is Parts Connexion or Mouser.

Z5P is a ceramic disc. 330 K is the capacitance and 1KV is the voltage-1000 volts. 3KV will work fine.
