I bought a used new (2011/2012) DRRI here in Berlin, Germany. It has this white noise problem, its not excruciating but it's noticeable. I came across this post here

http://www.tdpri.com/forum/amp-central- ... everb.html

In this thread a poster says that there was a single component on the tremelo circuit that was removed in DRRI's exported to Europe to comply with the latest EC regulations.

Does anybody know what to do ? What this component is?

Cheers
H

That "removed" component is the opto-coupler that generates a light (LED) pulse that induces the phase shift of the vibrato/tremolo section. All new DRRI (whether Euro or US bound) have replaced this opto-roach with an FET driven phase shift circuit (separate board on bottom).

This is prolly due to the complaint of "ticking" noise generated by the circuit picking up stray radio-frequency noise from the opto-roach.

Actually two separate boards.

Actually, they eliminated the opto-roach for EU RoHS compliance. The traditional circuit used a cadmium selenide photo-resistor (or LDR -- light dependent resistor). There wasn't much CdSe in the LDR, but it's nasty toxic stuff. So the same way they had to remove the lead from the solder, they had to alter the trem to get rid of the CdSe.

Since it's simpler to use the same circuit on all production models they changed the non-EU models too. Plus, CdSe LDR's are dinosaur technology that are pretty much only used in legacy circuits -- there are fewer and fewer sources of them every year so the cost keeps going up. Even in bulk they cost a couple dollars each, way more than a couple of IC chips.

At any rate, the only noise that's commonly associated with trem circuits is ticking. The most likely cause of excessive hiss is a bad preamp tube. Possibly a bad plate resistor or poor solder joint, but one or more poor tubes is the most likely culprit.

Brand new tubes can go bad, especially after long rides on trucks and boats.

Oh yeah......

Right......

For sure......

I suppose if someone dumped 10,000 DRRI's into the North Sea they might kill a minnow or two.

RoHS regulations are a complete load of unmitigated CRAP!

And everyone buying a new Fender amp now has to endure a gauntlet of problems due to these imperial edicts regardless of where they live.

Ain't the "new world order" grand?

So the Deluxe Reverb Reissue is no reissue ... it has new circuitry. If I understand correctly, there is nothing I can do but change the preamp tube. But then again, someone in the link I posted seems to have done it.

so what are my options?

Thank you all for your help
Cheers

" This white noise problem. "

This is usually a tube issue. Try cleaning the pins and sockets with a good contact cleaner. If this doesn't work, you may need to substitute known good tubes, into each socket, one-by-one --- until the white noise drops.

Thank you very much BMW2002Ti

the tubes are stock, So i guess I have to clean them first with isopropyl or some metal solvent/cleaner.

So how do these models compare to the originals?

Cheers

Much like the comparision between a Chevy Volt and a '69 SS396 Chevelle.

So, why is a DRRI issue posted in the Vintage Amp forum? :?

Thanks Arjay

I feel really disappointed !.. The real vintage ones- 1972- would run around 2200 Euros here !
So are there any amps that are still true to their original specs ???

Here's a vintage amp for you Retroverbial, but he's right I posted in the wrong section ...my bad !
http://www.ebay.de/itm/1972-Fender-Delu ... 5d45116aff

I guess its worth it
Best

That's one of the cleanest examples from 1972 that I've seen -- mostly original save for the speaker (it's an Oxford 12T6 from a '71 Twin Reverb).

You could do a worse.
