Hi everyone, I just registered and need some advice. I picked up a 1965 Pro Reverb that has Utah speakers in it, I would like to change out the speakers and am not sure what to get. I have heard Golds are great but would like to keep the price down to about $150 each of possible. I have a set of Celestion G12h 30 Anniversary that I could try but its a lot of work to get them in with the bolt layout. I need to play the amp around 3 on the volume level and use a tube screamer pedal for dirt. Mostly Classic Rock & Ambient is my thing. any advice??

One of the WGS offerings or Weber's 12F150's should be a sonic improvement over your Oxford pie tins. Kendricks Blackframe's are also renown for their vintage-like tone. For an original blackface Fender I'd normally recommend a pair of vintage Jensen C12N's but you have that budgetary stipulation......

Forget about my budget, I've decided I am going to get some great speakers to go with my great amp. The only thing is I want speakers with 8 mounting holes so that I don't have to mod anything. Does anybody have any thoughts as to how well the Jensen BlackBirds worked work for me?

Most speakers are configured for an 8-screw installation. Celestion seems to be the primary exception.

If this is the case then go with JBL D120F. I have recently bought the '65 Pro Reverb and purchased the JBL's. I should have them mid next week, and will report.

C12N's are about $300 pair, JBL's are double, $600 or thereabout.

And about triple the weight of the C12N's.

If the sound is that good I'll just ignore the weight.

I had a pair G12H-30 Anniversary's put away that I drilled out for an 8 hole and put them in, WOW what a difference, gave my cool little amp a great big sound with lots of definition, depth, volume ect.... I'm going to play the amp with a band on Sunday and see how it does but I'm sure it's going to be great. I have been using G12H-30's in other amps (my Badcat Cub ll) and now I know why I have liked them so much. Going to try it this way for a bit.

Celestion's generally do well in a Fender amp though only certain speakers within their line are accurately voiced for the prototypical vintage blackface tone. I've used V30's many times, usually in bass-reflex enclosures with a Bassman or Bandmaster head. Your G12H's should perform similarly.

Drilling them out for an 8 hole install we as easy too, I bolted the Celestion and the Utah together and marked the new holes and then held my shop vac as I was drilling to catch anything from going into the magnet or cone. Worked great.

I play out with the G12H 30 speakers on Sunday and while I enjoyed the big full sound (didn't love it) I have to say that they aren't the speakers for my BlackFace, a bit to spikey high for me and the weight was too much for me to haul around. So I am going to look at some Weber 12F150 50 watts and Jensen c12n, sounds like they are very Fender like speakers. Can someone give me their take on the Jensens, I read mixed reviews about the Reissues.

Mrstrum, I have not used the new RI Jensen C12N --- but I have used the Celestion and the Weber 12F150. The Weber 12F150 weighs 8 lbs versus the Celestion G12H-30's 10 lbs. So, not that much difference in weight.

Have you thought about a nice alnico speaker instead? A little more vintage tone than the usual ceramic variety. Like Weber's 12A125A? It weighs about 6 lbs. Or maybe mix an alnico and ceramic in one cab?

Give some consideration to Celestion's alnico Gold speakers. They're pricey but all else being equal, about the same as you'd spend on a pair of vintage Jensen's. Or hold out for a pair of vintage C12N's or the Vibranto variant (an upgraded C12N with a large bell magnet cover).

I have narrowed it down to the the 12F150 & the 12A125A. Here is my conundrum, I don't want speakers that are too loud because due to the room I'm playing in, I'll have to use my Air Brake which prefer not to do, would the 12F150 be a lot louder? I'm using pedals for my dirt.
