--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I plugged in a brand-new Zoom G2.1 pedal into the #1 input of the vibrato channel and when I turned the pedal on smoke started pouring out of the amp.
The pedal is defective. It constantly switches display messages, does not stop anywhere.I tried it on another smaller practice amp and it didn't work there either.

The power light on the amp is on. The fuse is good.
I can't tell if the tubes are burned out. No sound is reproduced upon plugging in my Strat. The amp had been used for routine playing for about 1 1/2 hours prior to plugging in the infernal pedal, performing in its usual fantastic manner.

Any suggestions as to where I may even begin looking for what happened to my amp. Feedback much appreciated
Fernando

Unless you are extremely familiar with the workings of tube amps, your first step is to find a good amp tech. There a lethal voltages stored inside a tube amp.

Thank you Frank, I appreciate the advice.
I am familiar with the workings and have enough test equipment, I just never fixed a guitar amp and would like to know where to start checking based on the info I provided.

I would second bigfrank's advice. I have a '66 DR as well and am pretty picky about who works on it.

Well, if you're very confident of your tech skills the first place I'd look is the gain stage. It plainly took a good shot of current. I'd visual check for burnt resistors, traces on the board, etc. There's a like a 1M ohm resistor at the input. See if thats fried. Test the pre-amp tubes. To help yourself out, go online and you won't have a hard time finding the schematics for your amp. Truth is though, I'd take it to a tech and let them worry about it. There's a good chance the board is toast if the current made it past the input.

Dear Cryingstrat: Thank you so much for your feedback. I have the schem for my amp, since I was planning to turn it from a silverface to a blackface, which as you probably know, involves the replacing of some resistors and re-routing of some connections at the pots.
It looks as though the tubes are intact, so I'll begin checking at the gain section as you suggested, and pray that it didn't go further.
Any clue as to whether the Zoom malfunction may have had anything to do with this or just coincidence?
Peace,
Fernando

All I can say is that would be my guess. I had a Zoom a long time ago and it shorted out too. Not that that has anything to do with your situation.

Thanks again for your reply. I am really angry about using a pedal in the first place, I never used one before, must be an omen of some sort.
Will update progress. i appreciate your comments.

Aspen Pittman wrote a very good book entitled "The Tube Amp Book" appropriately enough, that has a plethora of information you might find helpful. The DR schematic is in there as well as a whole bunch of other nuggets of wisdom. As for myself, I'd stick with a good amp tech. Otherwise I'd probably end up with a self-induced perm!

On a side note, my '66 came with a BF. Does yours have the SF?

Thanks for the info, Marty.

My DR is Silver Face.

The instructions on how to convert a SF amp to BF are in the 2008 July issue of Guitar Player mag., in the Shop Talk column.

Smoke coming out is not a good sign. Could be the transformer. I hope not.
