Same exact thing I experienced in my '68 DR! The Oxford felt very light and sounded like crap. The D120F was perfect in that amp!

Maybe they did a much better job with those 10L5 speakers...

The story I've pieced together from a number of credible sources is this: in the '50s and early '60s, Oxford was a respected manufacturer of audiophile-grade hi-fi woofers that were part and parcel of many notable brands of stereo speaker systems. Leo selected Oxford to build guitar speakers designed to his specifications based on their reputation and the company was all too happy to have the business. After Leo sold Fender, the new owners (CBS) ramped up production of everything in the catalog to flood the market with Fender gear and increase their customer base. Thus, the demands to meet production quotas for speakers rapidly outstripped Oxford's facilities and formerly tight QC/QA protocols began to suffer. Coils were not wound as tightly, magnet gaps increased in size, cones were not as uniformly shaped, etc etc etc. By the mid '60s, Oxford had fell out of favor with many Fender fans who grew to prefer Jensen's ceramic speakers for their punch and sonic clarity. As well, CTS was brought on board as a Fender supplier and their outstanding 10-inch speakers (both ceramic and rare-earth alloy) were very popular with players. The Cliff Notes version is, Oxford could not adapt to the new marketing paradigm and rode off into the sunset. And nobody really missed them.

The real question is how good the Oxford speakers were in the period 1965 - '66 comparing to other competitors (Jansen, CTS..).
