Hello,
I want to connect my Fender Champ 12 (red tolex) with an orange ppc212 (16 ohm) external cab. The Problem: there´s no Output for an external cab. The Champ 12 amp runs with 8 ohm. Any idea how to solve the Problem? Can i connect an 8 ohm amp with a 16 ohm cab wihtout damaging the amp?
thanks a lot for your help

Hi Jenkins,

Yes, you can certainly use a 16-ohm speaker with your 8-ohm Champ 12, but the amp will produce less power with a 16-ohm speaker than it does with an 8-ohm speaker.

You could modify the amp and install a speaker jack on the chassis where the existing speaker wires come out. You could also unplug the internal speaker and connect a speaker jack to the existing speaker wires, then connect a plug to the internal speaker to be able to use internal or external speaker(s).

Yeah Jenkins, Shimmy has it right!!! A neat thing about that amp is the unbalanced line out. If you could get a slave amp to push the 2X12 cab, that would be the real deal. I used to run a Champ 12 into a 410 Musicman, playing in a Blues band. Really liked that amp. A single-ended Class A amp is hard to beat!!! Good sounds are bound to come your way!!! Art

thank you guys for your great help!!
@shimmilou: good idea with the jack. but less power...the champ isn't a beast at all. what do you guess ? 50 % power or less? is there any other way without loosing power?

@aclempoppi: using the lineout into a slave amp sounds interesting. but does the slave amp have a big influence to the sound?
thanks in advance.
best
jenkins

It's hard to say exactly how much power loss with a mismatched impedance, but up to 50% anyway. The power out of a tube looks like a bell curve as the impedance changes, peaking with matched impedance load, and tapering off when impedance is lower or higher than matched. Although, 50% less power does not mean 50% less volume, far from it.

Use a better, more efficient 8 ohm speaker, or maybe use an 8-ohm 2x12, or 8-ohm 4x12 cab, so you will push more air without losing power.

hmm. ok. but i already bought a great sounding orange 2x12 with 16 ohm.
what about replacing my 8 ohm fender champ internal speaker with a 16 ohm speaker and connecting it parallel with the external 16 ohm orange cab? makes 8 ohm and no loss of power? best, Jenkins

That would work just fine.

celestion g12 h 30? celestion vintage 30 (same Speaker used in my orange cab), eminence, jensen... Didn´t know that there are so many Speakers on the market ;-) i´d like to Keep the clean Sound of my champ. thanks again!!!
