22mfd/500VDC caps will work fine in your amp. Didn't your tech bias the amp? Should always be done after tube and/or power filter cap change-outs. It does sound like the amp is running a bit "cold."

The easiest way to bias a Deluxe is to get a bias adapter than fits between the socket and tube. You can then adjust bias without pulling the chassis. Some bias adapters have capabilty of reading the plate voltage, too. You need this value to accurately adjust the tubes to proper idle wattage.

One last question - my repair guy replaced the caps (as in, the 4 under the chassis, in the "can" with 22uF caps, although I've noticed that the original values should be 16uF. Is this a big enough margin to affect the tone? I've heard of the effects of "over-filtering" before, but obviously I dont want to assume that I know more than an experienced tech.
Thanks!,

Higher values in the filter-cap section often produce the result of tightening up an amp's bass response. In concert with a slightly cold idle bias, it could be the cause of the perceived "thinness". The cabinet is adequately sized for the speaker so that is not an issue.

BMW2002ti - thanks for the advice, I'm going to order a Bias Adapter. The tech did bias it, but I can't say for sure that his settings match what I'm looking for, also I'd like to try out some other tubes, so I presume I'll need to reset bias again at some point.

Arjay - thanks (again!) - I may at some stage consider returning the caps to their original values, actually my tech used the phrase "tightening up" when describing the work he'd done. I'd be interested to know if people had any thoughts on whether it's better to go "vintage-correct" in this regard?

While we're here, does anyone have any particular power tube suggestions for this amp?

...Sorry, also forgot to ask, can anyone tell me the recommended settings when biasing tubes in this circuit? Looking for info on the Deluxe is like like looking for a needle in a pile of webpages devoted to Deluxe Reverbs!

It's been decades since I owned a non-verb AB763 Deluxe Amp but I'll pass on what I can. The schematic shows 410VDC at the plates (slightly lower than the reverb-equipped edition). A good base-line for the idle bias is around 19.5mA. I run the output bottles in all three of my DR's at 21mA. I would not push 6V6GTA's beyond 23mA in any scenario to avoid the risk of red-plating and damage. Your ears and your wallet will determine which brand of tube works best. I prefer US-made NOS glass but there are several contemporary tubes available that will work well.

Great, thanks so much, I'm gonna do some studying while I'm waiting for that bias adapter.

What speaker for this amp did you ultimately decide on?

I went for the Warehouse G12C, which I already had in my Blues Deluxe. I thought this would be the one, it has a lovely rounded, sparkling tone. Nice thing is, the G12C/S that I bought for the Deluxe has now gone into the Blues Deluxe, and it's perfect, as the BDX is quite bright as it is, so this speaker is a change I'd been considering for a while. Good week!

How would you compare G12C/S and G12C?

To the symbiotic benefit of both amps.

Rawk on!

Very subtle difference, the "S" has smoother high frequencies, in the Blackface amp, to my ears, this seemed to accentuate some aggressiveness in the mids, while I found the "C" to have a bell-like clarity across the spectrum. Saying that, those same qualities made the "S" the perfect match to the Blues Deluxe, it brings all the benefits of the "C", but softens that top end spike. I'm tempted to buy one more of each for my 2x12. Hope this helps.
