I've been looking for older Super Reverbs lately, and I'm trying to decide between two at the moment.

One is a '66 in decent condition, but it appears the speakers are Jensen P10R's. I can't find any info about these being original speakers for the SR (except on Jensen's website where they claim "The P10R was the signature speaker in Fender's legendary Super Reverb®. " So I'm guessing these speakers are the re-issues used in the SRRI.

The other is a 67/68 Transitional Drip-Edge in a cleaner condition with an AB763 circuit and the original CTS alnico speakers.

I know "better" is highly subjective, but I was wondering which would be a more solid purchase. Which would hold better value? Are the Jensen re-issues inferior? They're both very close in price.

Thanks

Jensen's were used in the early blackface Super Reverb's but more commonly they were seen with Oxford 10L6's. Most of the Jensen-equipped amps had C10Q's installed as OEM. Jensen fell from favor with FMI in 1967 over a pricing dispute, leaving Oxford and CTS as the primary speaker sources for these amps. CTS produced both ceramic and alnico versions of the same speaker for Fender, with the alnico variant the more commonly-used type.

The imported Jensen re-issue's sound nothing like the original Chicago-built drivers and given a choice, I'd opt to locate a quartet of vintage C10Q's or a similar array of CTS alnico's. Reconed and reconditioned with modern materials and used respectfully, they'll last a lifetime and beyond.

I recommend that you check that silverface Super Reverb's pedigree very carefully. If it's a '68 chassis and it was made subsequent to May of that year, it is not an AB763 circuit. Look for a build date ink-stamped inside the chassis. If it shows a "birthday" of the 20th week of the year (or earlier) you're in good shape.

Groovekris...I've had both a 72 SFSR with the CTS Alnicos and a BFSR from '65 with CTS ceramics and both were great sounding amps, but if I had my choice I'd go blackface every time. The highs are not as spikey and the bottom is tighter with the CTS Ceramics...and the reverb was very good on my 72, but the BFSR's reverb goes just a bit deeper into the splash zone!

Tuff choice...but either way you just can't go wrong, best amp Fender ever made that wasn't covered in tweed...IMHO.

And here is a little primer for ya to help decide.

Did you examine the amps in the links, Tony?

The blackface is, relatively speaking, a wreck......non-OEM speakers, replaced parts, trashed cab, etc.

OTOH, the silverface (which I believe to be a late '67) is a creampuff......original and unmolested.

I don't know about "Awesome" but it works for me. I have the three of the four eras covered with the blackface, silverface, and Rivera era, just got to find a nice tweed amp and I am all set...not that any collection is ever truly complete!

Hi,
Quick question...I've read elsewhere that the Super Reverb can get a "crunchy" tone like a Marshall or Vox AC30 Is this true with the AB 763 circuit?

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

The Super Reverb is capable of delivering ample amounts of beef but it needs to be cranked above "6" to hit that sweet spot (it'll be *pretty loud* at that point). As well, the middle tone control should be cracked wide open or nearly so, with the treble control at around mid-point. The bright switch will add extra sparkle if necessary.

I don't think you'll ever get the same "crunchy" tone as a Marshall or Vox due to gain stage setup and the output tubes (EL34 or EL84). Pedal will prolly be needed to get close or under-rated speakers or both.

Not recommended.

(unless one has really deep pockets or is into S&M)

Many a 40-watt Super Reverb has fried one or more of its OEM speakers when dimed. Even with a quartet of CTS alnico's with presumably a combined 120-watt power-handling capability, the amp has sufficient dynamic reserve to imperil even the hardiest of 10-inch speakers.

Arjay,

Yeah, I know what you mean. I tried out an SR through a single 10-inch Jensen (P10R). I use this speaker as load and to check for noisy tubes. Boy, if you crank the amp and you can SEE the speaker bottom out and clip. Fuzziest tone known to mankind.

Test drive though this speaker only lasted a few chords.

:D  :D
