So today the shop got in a 62' super and naturally I was curious so I took an in depth look. But unlike the ts 5881 tubes I was expecting I saw this:

The price was quite reasonable as there was a replaced transformer and speakers.

The only consistency with the brownface Fender's is their inconsistency.

Here's another variation of a vintage Super tube chart, labeled as a "5G4"......

Note the altered pre-amp tube array.

This particular amp belongs to one of the forum's elder statesmen, "rebelsoul".

Lot of inconsistencies, esp during those transition years. The RCA 6L6GC was just becoming more available in the early 1960s. A tube that Fender like to use, not only for the greater output than the 5881 --- but also for copyright issues with RCA (owner of AT&T and Western Electric, at the time).

I believe that Fender paid pretty much going wholesale rate for the mil spec Tungsol 5881. Considerably more than the cost of the 6L6GC direct from RCA.

Luckily, both are excellent tubes. Albeit, different tone and output specs.

+1

The 5881 always struck me as "browner" and "tweedier" than any of the 6L6 variants.

Arjay,

You'll also notice how most tweed and transition year Fender 5881/6L6 amps used the 12AX7/7025 as the phase inverter. And much less voltage swing compared to the blackface era and the use of the 12AT7.

I've found that popping a good 12AU7/5814A/7016 into the 12AT7 position can change the tone to more of a brownface/tweed tone. And maintain pretty good headroom. Amp dependent, of course.

All part of Leo's jihad to wring additional clean headroom from his new blackface circuits by a liberal application of high voltage. I think the only constant between the brownface and blackface power supplies was the unchanged 6.3VAC heater tap. Everything else got jacked considerably.
