The last matched quartet of serviceable CTS alnico's that I saw on Ebay went for $375 and the listing did not last long before someone grabbed them.

You gotta be quick!

 You also gotta have the money

The CTS alnico's will have to wait a while.

Jerry...If you want to go another route and not a bad one IMHO.

They need re-coning but these are also OEMs and it is a set of four. C10Q's might be another option for you.

Jensen C10Q's would be a great addition to my SF. I am really tempted on those speakers but I'm just too short on funds right now. The cost of those speakers plus re-coning is just out of my reach right now.

Thanks for the links.

Yeah those CTS are not to easy to find and you have to pay a premium for a matched set... another option would be to find a 70s SR for cheap with those speakers, remove the speakers and resell the amp. They're always listed on CL for $500-800...

http://tampa.craigslist.org/pnl/msg/3960945741.html

$500 for everything!

I love the Jensens that Tony listed, I have a pair... but they won't sound as good as the CTS in a SR IMO. The combination is to die for! :D

cedarblues,

Thanks.

Yes, that is another option. I'm sure I would be very happy with either the Jensen or CTS speakers. However, as noted in my previous post, I'm just too broke right now, plus that amp is in Florida, I'm in California which equals mo' money for shipping. :)

The Eminence speakers that are in the amp now sound just fine to my "tin" ears.

Just play the amp as is and put that matched-quartet of vintage CTS or Jensen's on your "target of opportunity" list.

That was just an example... keep an eye on your local CL, and when the time is right and you can afford it go for it :)

Yeah Cedar I saw that ad too. Surprised it hasn't gotten snatched up yet. Another ad for a 1974 Twin reverb was up for the same amount or a trade, I offered a trade but was an hour too late. I'm also on the lookout for speakers for my SFSR to replace the 2 CTS and 2 Rola speakers in it, but no rush. I'm enjoying mine for what it is right now, and even with the speakers in it it sounds pretty damn good!

If I didn't already have one, with the CTS speakers, I'd grab it! My '73 is in excellent shape and the speakers were already reconed, $650. It is still my favorite amp, as long as those 4 CTS are still in there :)

The CTS alnico works well for any 10-inch application where vintage Fender tone is desired......

(shown here in a custom-built 2 x 10 Bandmaster combo and a '65 Princeton Reverb)

You know... the JBL K110 aren't that bad either. Sure seems to go well with the Tremolux. I've been noodling with this amp as much as the SF VLR that has CTS 10-inchers. Both have unique tone. VLR OD's a bit sooner. Slower & sooner. Tremolux has a nice brown bass to die for.

So, if those Eminence sound good in that SFSR... go for it.

Yes, it is fun. I really enjoy seeing all those vintage speakers mounted in vintage Fender amplifiers. :)
