Jerry,

Thanks, for the compliments. Hey, how do those Genalex ECC83/B759 sound? Supposed to be pretty good with low background noise. Spiral wound heaters.

For those interested, I put in GE 7581A (Owensboro, KY vintage). So, that explains the slightly louder output. I like them in these vintage amps, for their long life as well as tone. Close to BP RCA 6L6GCs.

BTW.. did you redo the tolex? Looks pretty nice compared to th e"before" photo.

Should last a good while. Enjoy!

Steve,

You're Very Welcome. You deserve compliments, you do a hell-of-a-job.

Those Genalex ECC83/B759s sound great to me and the volume is definitely higher that it was. The amp definitely has the Fender Tone.

No, I did not re-do the Tolex. There were several scuff marks that were all the way down to the wood and other wear marks in the tolex all over the amp. I just used some liquid shoe polish and dabbed in on most of the spots and wiped it with a damp cloth as I did each spot. Colored with bare spots nicely. From a few feet away you can't see the spots. Up close, you can see where I touched up the spots. If you look closely at the photos (herein) I took outside with the amp, you can see some of the spots on the amp edges are a little darker.

Arjay is correct too, my grandkids will be using this amp long after I'm gone. :)

Thanks again for your great work!

Jerry

Jerry,

The extra bass and overall loudness prolly due more to fresh 'lytics than signal tubes (12AX7 or AT7s).

And the mil spec 7581A. GE ones can run 40 watts per tube (Class AB1, push-pull) & not even sweat. Just a bit of trivia... the anode plate alloy coating is exploded onto the copper (process developed by Texas Instruments). Superior heat dissipation.

Anyhow, with a healthy phase inverter swing --- you get much better headroom than even the Holy RCA 6L6GC. Thus, the better bass and transients.

+1 on all counts.

The GE 7581A is like Tung-Sol's original 5881, only on steroids.

A superior product of its time.

Arjay,

I hope Jerry can get around to test driving the new Genalex ECC83/B759 versus some NOS Raytheon 12AX7As. The Genalex are *supposed* to have a nice brown, vintage tone -- similar to NOS blackplates.

Suppose is the operative word...

+1

With the myriad of variables at play, that's really hard to quantify. Guitar type, pickup type, picking style, outboard effects, speaker type, room acoustics, vagaries of the human ear, you name it. A virtual smorgasbord of parameters at play.

I have been following this from the beginning. Wow looks like a great job, I guess I am a wee bit jealous  Now if I could only fined someone in the Mid Hudson Valley region of NY to take on my AA1069 1969 SFSR and bring it up to spec or maybe change it to a AB763. I have been looking but I have not found anyone competent or trust worthy enough to hand the job over to  So I'm just following threads and studying the schematics and being careful as I go in side my amp to figure it all out. I imagine I need to get one or two of those DVD's and books on how to know all there is to know about my tube amp :D

atolleter Not trying to hijack this from the OP but yeah, I live in Ulster County it is a little far, but that might turn out to be my only option. I do not know if you can publish this techs info on the form as it might be considered advertisement. Maybe there is a way to send a Personal Message but I do not know. Any suggestions would be helpful
