Actually, I picked up the amp on Sunday (July 7th). Been inspecting, cleaning and playing since. It does sound nice with no humming, crackling, popping, hiss or anything like that.

I found the amp on my local craiglist. The guy I bought it from related that the amp is just like it was when he bought it 25 years ago from a pawn shop. Said he only used it as a back-up amp but used it often enough to keep it functional.

The amp is in rough shape but is all original with the exception of the Eminence speakers (thanks Arjay). It has no faceplate at all and all the knobs look like crap and a Master Volume was added (which will be removed). It is also missing the tilt back legs.

Image

This is what it looked like when I got it home. Some previous owner mounted the black grill cloth by going through the grill cloth, the speaker baffle and then the speaker. At lease the "Fender" label was present but in the middle

The chassis. BMW2001Ti related that all the caps are original.

Image

Speaker baffle was upside down.

Image

This is probably why the baffle was upside down (chips out of mounting holes). I fixed with toothpicks and Elmers glue. The baffle tightened right up. YA !

Image

What it looks like after my clean up. I just tacked the grill cloth back on to protect the speakers until I can get some new grill cloth. The drip molding is missing the corners but it doesn't look bad to me.

Image

Already talked with Arjay (Retroverbial) and he is turning me on with some replacement hardware parts and links to many more. Talked to BMW2001Ti and he will be checking the amp out for me a little later on. Great help on this forum !!

Thanks Arjay and BMW2001Ti !!

When I get it back to cosmetically presentable, I'll be back with more photos.

Jerry

A super (pardon my pun) score and a righteous price.

Rawk on!

Jerry, nice addition. Changing that AC568 to an AA270 (get rid of those cathode-tied sandbox resistors) & redoing the main filter & bias supply caps prolly should be first on the list.

BTW--- one of the EL34 that came with the amp lost all of its vacuum. It's the tube with the white top where the getter flash once resided (photo you sent me). Look to see if there is any obvious cracks in that tube. Could be important for the restoration. As sometimes ill-fitting sockets can lead to pin damage and vacuum loss.

My SR has been reverted to AB763. Tone is crazy-@ss good through the CTS alnicos. Yours should have a bit more output power. Seem like bigger magnets on those Eminence speakers.

Rectifier is a 5U4GB (looks like an RCA). I like the 5AR4/GZ34 better, in this amp. And that seller on EBAY, still has those great Philips mil spec NOS ECG 5AR4 mis-labeled 5V4GA. I have put 6 of those into amps, now. Two into mine. Very tough, steady tubes.

I'm not a big fan of those big dull dark-brown caps. Those and the blue Paktron (or IEC) were in the last of the SF Fenders. Most amps are usually help with good coupling cap in strategic locations (like input and PI).

You are going to love this amp, once R&R'ed. Much more Bluesier tone and response than say, a Dual Showman.

BTW#2... best modern tube for this amp is the Tungsol STR 6L6GC or the EH. IMHO. Tough and powerful. Do they have the soul of an RCA or GE? Think you know the answer to that question.

Good luck with the amp!

:D  :D

I've recommended the Electro-Harmonix bottles based on the modest 460VDC plate voltage and the fact that the EHX's are somewhat less costly. They're both excellent contemporary tubes though.

Once all vestiges of CBS's nefarious diddling have been swept away, a reversion back to a conventional symmetric biasing configuration would be beneficial as well.

Thanks Arjay,

Really appreciate all you help with this amp, especially before I bought it with the info to make sure it was a 1969 and of course all you've done after that.

Thanks for all the information Steve.

That's the first thing Arjay told me to do, remove those EL34 tubes. I did, I took the two outside EHXs from my Showman Reverb and put them in.

I'm looking forward to what the amp will sound like after you've done your magic on it.

With all the stuff I'm getting from Arjay and getting a new faceplate and grill cloth, I will be busy putting getting all that stuff installed. Looking forward to it.

Thanks

Jerry

The "sir" is definitely not required. If anybody should be saying "sir", it is I :D

No sweat, Sarge.

BTW, I have all of your goodies earmarked and sorted. I'll ship them out when I RTB from the "workers' paradise" at the end of the month.

+1

With Steve handling the chassis servicing, the amp will be firing on all eight cylinders in no time.

Thanks Arnold.

To borrow the McDonnald's ad, "I'm Loving It". It sounds good as it is but after Beemer goes through it, I'm sure there will be a great improvement. :D
