Hi

I've got what I believe to be an 1981 Blackface Twin Reverb and I need to replace the speakers as they are damaged ... trouble is, I don't know what the specs of the replacements should be ...

The existing speakers have the following written on them:
8 ohms - 37 7915 005379
The magnets are slightly bigger than a cd.
They have blue Fender stickers on with "special design speakers" written on them.

The amp itself has this:
350 watts
100 / 260 volts
50 / 60 hz

And beneath the speakers:
Minimum loads
Speaker 4 ohms
Ext Speaker
135 watts RMS

I know what 8 ohms means but I'm unsure what watt the speakers need to be ...

I have the opportunity to buy 2 Fender speakers that are believed to be 60 watt each ... would this work?

I'm not looking for a super clean amp necessarily but if they turn out that way that's okay with me!

Cheers
Danny

Your existing speakers were manufactured by CTS in the 15th week of 1979.

These amps are behemoths when it comes to available power output (I have one) and while the 60-watt speakers you mentioned might be safely used, you might consider something in the 75 to 100-watt range to provide a prudential margin of security. Eminence, Celestion, and other companies offer some excellent choices that should suit your sonic needs.

That's great - thank you.

It wouldn't be safe to consider that the amp would just drive
the speakers harder so they'd break up earlier?

Thanks for your help!

There's a very fine line between the point where a speaker "breaks up" and that where the speaker actually breaks.

I don't believe in abusing a driver in that manner. And in any case, with 135 available watts, it's likely that if you dime the amp you'll be playing to an audience of precisely one because everyone else will have sanely left the area. Use pedals for OD, distortion, and compression -- save your hearing for things that really matter.

The Legend would be an excellent choice IMO, both for its sonic qualities and its power-handling capabilities. It's a very efficient design as well which will likely be louder than your original CTS speakers (assuming identical input levels and front-panel control settings during such a comparison).

Tung-Sol's re-issue 6L6GC-STR's are the only contemporary power tubes suitable for Fender's 135-watt ultra-linear chassis.

Plate voltage in the ultra-linear Twin Reverbs exceeds 500VDC (it's 460VDC in the earlier blackface and silverface models). The "STR" in the Tung-Sol's designation translates as "special tube requirements" and theirs is the only 6L6GC on the market engineered and manufactured for such stringent-and-specific applications. Red Ruby tubes might be used but their quality has declined markedly in recent years and I'd be loath to trust them now.
