i was reading a brief (old) article about Fender amps on Tapeop.com where the author mentioned differences among the various tweed/brownface/blackface baffles ("more resonant" etc.) and I wondered if anyone here has altered/modded their amp's baffle, and if so, to what effect? I have the stock baffle in my SF Vibrolux and expect to keep it that way.

Yes I have changed two baffles (do a search in this section of the forum for Bantam Bass Amps) both '69's. I did a refurb, replacing that POS Yamaha speaker and took pictures, with my instructions, etc. I did two different Bantams (Great 30 watt, 6L6, tube rectified platform) one with a 15 inch 65 Jensen I got from another forum member and one with 2x12 Jensen MODs. The 15 inch one breaks up a little nicer, but the 2x12 one is coming along.

Fender amps made after 1970 though have a fixed baffle that is part of the cabinet and you would have to destroy the cab to change the baffle to a different type or speaker size.

There are some great guys here that helped with the refurb and I learned a bunch during both and they made great projects for the winter with my son.

T2,

The 2 x 10 inch combo is kinda nice, too. A bit easier to lug around, than the 2 x 12 inch. Very nice tone... esp the P10Q or CTS alnico combo.

Twang99,

The baffle board is part of the speaker's tone. Since the speakers are bolted right to this board -- both speaker and board couple and project the overall tone.

All wood have a characteric set of resonance frequencies. In general, the lowest pitch frequency is inherent to the MDF board versus other wood types. That's why many manufacturers, including Fender amps use MDF as the baffle board. The idea is to have the cleanest bass, without being boomy.

Solid pine or plywood tend to have higher resonance frequency. This can couple with low fundamental notes and cause "boominess." Esp if the baffle board's resonance frequencies overlap with the speakers inherent resonance points.

Very confusing. Hope this made some sense. :?:  :?:

Beemer you are right about the resonant freqs.

I went with the good quality MDF when I redid the Bantams, as it was as close as I could get to original.

Retroverbial recommended this type when he was walking me through the first refurb.

The sound is not boomy, very crisp highs without any shrillness, and the mids have that nice edge to em.

Yeah Twang, I use void-free or Baltic birch plywood fixed baffles in 3 amps. A 2X12 cab, a 2X10 combo, and a 1X12 combo. Those are all pine enclosures, they all provide a very balanced expression from alnico and ceramic speakers. My '55 Valco is housed in an over sized pine box with a Baltic birch floating baffle(10" alnico). It's mate is another over sized pine cab with a Baltic birch fixed baffle(closed-back 10" alnico). That guy really has the goods!! I tend to mix speakers for the sake of texture. Just a suggestion. Art
