Thanks for the tip on the diodes.

The '65 is still in the repair shop, I wanted an experienced tech to do the initial once over. The recommendation (so far) is that everything is OEM and in good working order. The main capacitors checked out OK, and were recommended not to be replaced. I'll pass on the info about the diodes to be sure they are OK also.

I ordered Jensen P12N Alnico speakers.

Tungsol STR 6L6GC have been installed.

I haven't seen the new speaker cloth yet...but ordered as close as I could find.

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

In restoration situations such as yours, I usually build an all-new valence panel for the amp and re-grill it using the same cloth that's going onto the speaker cabinet (store the unmolested valence panel for posterity). That way, both amp head and speaker cabinet are a cosmetic match.

Yep, makes sense. I should have enough of the new grill cloth for both the speaker cabinet and head. If, not I'll order more.

A linear yard of material (36" x 36") will be sufficient for both the baffle board and the valence. Be sure to orient the cloth correctly.

Yes, The shop had enough material. Hopefully it's ready tomorrow.

Diodes were checked, and are Good. The senior technician advised that since the filter capacitors and diodes have "aged" together they have settled in to a complimentary voltage and tone that should not be tampered with. He was concerned that a faster switching diode might create a larger surge at turn on, which would not be good. Further the fast switching diodes are meant for switching power supplies in digital circuitry. The amp is clearly not digital :D So the decision was to leave well enough alone, and not mess with the original circuitry. I'll get some photos up when it's ready.

Is that shop doing the re-grill?

Yes, the shop is re-grilling. I guess I could have tackled it, but they had it apart for the new speakers, flipping the baffle board etc. and gave me a reasonable price ($40) and saved me the headache. Next time...I'll be brave and do it myself.

Arjay must be prescient. Grill went on 90 degrees off. So...more cloth...more waiting. It looked sharp. More silver colour than the aged yellow, but not "right"

I've seen hundreds of so-called professionals screw the pooch when it comes to grill cloth -- your situation is nothing novel. Attention to details is what separates the craftsmen from the also-ran's.

Well...now pretty well everything is done. Cloth is on the right way around.

The electronics installed or checked in the Head
Tubes: Tung-Sol 6L6 GC STR (matched set, biased) everything else is original. Couple of resistors
Diodes: Checked...all good
Capacitors: Checked...all good
Grounded 3-pin power cord
Fender Single Footswitch (Fender Store)

2X12 Cabinet
Speakers: two Jensen P12Q AlNiCo magnet, rewired cabinet
Piggyback Thumb screws set, Vintage handle replacement
Speaker Cable Evidence Audio - Siren II
Grill cloth best match, Fender Style Aged Black/Silver/Grey S-G303

See the original "un-aged" portion of the orginal gril cloth under the logo from the Head compared to the new S-G303

The grill cloth on the amp head's valence panel appears to be reversed.

Thanks Arjay....you're absolutely right...it's on backwards. Didn't notice when I picked it up. I'll fix it.
