Good choice, Jay!! The Mesa Boogie should be pretty cool. I've worked on a few of them, only because of abuse( dropping out of van and a nose-dive off a 4X12 cab). Otherwise, I can dig their build quality and sound. Keep Pickin!!! Art

Now is a great time to get MB amps at GC, I've seen the prices drop dramatically since the break between the two companies. I recently got a TA-15 for $899 and I just saw the same amp for $649, and lowered prices on all other MB amps. :D

Didn't know about that, Shimmy!!! Jay, got to tell you, my all time favorite playing amp is a Matchless Clubman 35. Not as versatile as a Boogie, just sayin'... try every amp, before makin' that commitment. JMHO Art

@aclempoppi,,, I have tried every amp in the Vetta, as well as tweaking the sounds. But my style of playing is more suited to the Mesa Boogie Mark V. I always have and probably always will play Hard Rock/Classic/Rock. And even though the Vetta has so many different amps, its not a Tube amp. And of all the Tube amps I have ever tried, Marshalls,Fenders,Vox's, etc,, The one I find most appealing to my ear is the Mesa Boogie line. And I have noticed a difference between amps, like the Vetta 2, and other amps that have real Tubes in them. And Although I love the flexibility of the Vetta 2, there is no way I can get a "Tube Dirty" sound from it or any other amp. But the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Model in the Vetta 2, sounds just like the real thing. With lots of Gain and very Dirty and Crunchy,,, just the way I like it. And having been a Dream Theater Fan for 25 years now, they go through many different tones and sounds. Both clean and dirty. And I find that I can replicate most of their music thru the Vetta 2. But when I am doing open mics, carrying around a 70+lb amp with 150 watts and 2X12's is a pain in the butt. Not too mention, when I walk into some smaller clubs with it, I always get the same comment, "You know, that amp is too big for this place!" At which point I always tell them, thats why they put a volume knob on it. And having heard all the Mark V sounds, from clean to crunchy to Crazy gain! I still like its flexibility. Although, I have also been looking at the Mesa Boogie Express Plus 5:50. Which is smaller and can go from 5 watts to 50 watts. And it has a great sound as well. But I just really want to be done with buying amps, and get "The Best Tube Amp I can" and be done with it. Which I feel is the Mark V!! It has the sounds my ears like, it has all the tones I could ever need, and it is smal enough that I wont break my back carrying it. Not too mention it wont take up too much room on the stage. Some of the Clubs I play in have reall small stages, and space is a premium. And The Vetta Takes up allot of room. If I need more speakers, I have a Crate 4x12 Slant downstairs, that I never use. But should I ever need it for a big venue, its there. But in the end, I really want the Mark V, that and a few Pedals and I will have all I need. However, now that I have repaired the Fender "Evil Twin",, I have to say,, It has quite a great tone. The Clean is typical Fender Clean (Perfect) as always. And the Dirty Channel is Very nice, as long as I use the Powersoak. Otherwise its just too damn loud!!! The funny thing is that all my other guitar player friends use all Fender Amps!! Of course they all have big pdeal boards and its a pain to setup. So with the Boogie, I figure I owuld need only a my Boss Digital Delay, Maybe a Wah pedal. And maybe one other. because the Mark V has its own pedalboard,, with channel,EQ, Mute and best of all, a Solo button. This way I dont have to wonder if anyone will be able to hear me during a solo. Anyways,, I have tried the Matchless, but for some reason it doesnt do it for me. Itt sounds like a Fender amp to me.

Jay, the Mark V seems like the right choice, for you!!! About the Matchless Clubman; It was an'89. At the time, I was retiring the Twin Reverb. I was into Robert Cray & Magic Sam sounds. Test drove (3) BF Super Reverb amps. With all due respect to our members, they just didn't have enough depth. Found the Clubman 35 to be the real deal for my needs. So, you never know until you try 'em all. You're the final judge!!! Keep Pickin', Art

aclempoppi,,, I love the versatality of my Vetta,, but the other night my friends band was playing and 1 of the guitar players asked me if I wanted to play a few songs, as he was bored with them,, so I said sure. Now,,, Mind you,, I have Never,,, Never in my 38 years of playing Guitar,, Ever played a Fender Telecaster!!! I'll keep the reason short,, about 27 years ago I bought brand new, a Fender Strat (Squire) White on White!! It was beautiful, but didnt have a lot of gain. Well. It stayed in my room in the case for about 2 months. One day, I took it out to play and I noticed that there was a crack in the body that ran parallel to the neck, just at the base of the last fret to about 2 inches down along the bottom of the neck pickup. I had never taken out, or dropped it!! So I brought it back to where I got it and they refused to cover the warranty saying I must have dropped it or something. Needless to say I asked them to show me even the slightest scratch, which they could not. But they still refused to honor it!! So I called Fender HQ,,, They refused to help,, I spoke to some BS VP, he said "It wasnt his problem, Imust have dropped it or something".. So I wrote a very long letter and sent a copy to each member of Fenders Board. I never even recieved a response!!!! So,, Needless to say,, I never played a Fender again, and that guitar!! Welll,,, It made great Firewood!!! I didn't care about the money loss by then. So, I pick up my buddys Telecaster which was plugged into his new Fender Amp.. It took me a minute, because the action is so high and it was setup for slide playing,, and all my guitars are setup .040 or lower. They are all setup for speed. But this amp he had was a new Fender amp,, he had no pedals on it and the harder you layed the guitar the better it sounded!! I was amazed!! But I still wont ever buy another Fender guitar Again!!! But since I fixed my Fender "Evil Twin" Amp,,, man!! What a great sound it has, the dirty will compete with anything out there. But,,, as I said,,I prefer simple setups and I have a hard time carrying aorund my big amps. The Fender is 60lbs itself. So,, thats why I want the Mark V. I just hope I will be able to find one I can afford.

I just picked up a 1989 black knob version of "the Twin". I was wondering if I could put a master volume control into the amp? Maybe at the Tube 9A pin 1 or at the tube 3A pin 1 location. Is this possible and how would I do this?

If you have the schematics and are willing to do some math. Not too mention, I would consult someone who is an electrical engineer before I would make any changes to the circuit At ALL!! These circuits are designed to work with the components within the Circuit and to the Voltages and Current that each one is designed for. So, unless you have a valid proven way to add a master volume into the circuit, I wouldnt do it. I would try taken the easy way out! :) If anything try, using a powersoak, this will allow you to turn up the amps volume while maintaining the proper load on the speakers and let you turn the amps Pre-amp and Main Power section up as high as you want. Then you can control the whole output thru the Powersoak. I am using a Tom Scholz Powersoak which seems to work just great! I am able to get the tubes screaming while keeping the volume levels within a tolerable range. With my "Evil Twin", I have to use the Powersoak because this is without a doubt the loudest amp I have ever palyed through!!! no lie!! In a normal size room, say 16'X16' you cant get the volume up past 1, or else its too loud. hence the need of the powersoak. But it allows you to really let the tubes get overdriven and gives a beautiful tone. But it was designed for heavy Solid Body guitars. So with my 78 Les Paul Custom this thing will compete with anything out there... So in short,, the answer to your question,,, try using a powersoak, its cheaper, removable and you wont have to mess with the circuit and possibly blow it up. If you know someone who has a powersoak, ask them to just borrow it and see how it works for you. If not then look for Fender "The Twin" Master Volume Mods on the web and hope for the best. Hope that helps,, Good Luck!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the schematics and I have pretty good general knowledge about the goings on inside of amps. I have built a twin 6BQ5 18 watt of my own design and a Bassman clone. The placements I suggested seem like the logical places to me, but this is a bit more complicated than the amps I have built. Also, as stated, each amp is built to work as designed. So I was hoping somebody with a little more knowledge could help me out. As far as the power soak goes, it changes the signal to much for my taste and I do not care for them. So I found a couple 6" but powerful loud speakers and made a little dummy speaker that is about 12' square and can soak a 100 watt amp if I choose to go that way. I would still like a master volume on "The Twin" for more control though, if it is possible. Anyone?

I was going over the schematic again and I know feel guite silly for asking the question in the first place. I realized the places I was asking to put a volume control were right before and right after the effects loop. So I wired up a 1Meg pot with a 1/4 inch jack at each end. I plugged it into the loop and now I can crank the pre amp and adjust the output with the effects loop. I assume you could just use a volume pedal for this. It works great, just be sure you use shielded wires and ground it properly or you will get humming. I did not check, but I would guess the schematics for the Boss or simular volume pedal would work. I just built a little wooden box that sits on top of the amp. I did weight it so it dosen't vibrate around or move when you try to adjust it. I have an Egnater Renegade that has the master volume and now I can get the same sound out of The Twin at a quarter of the price. Not to mention, The Twin has a real spring reverb. Anyone want to buy a Renegade?

Very cool!!!! I for one, really dig it when a person can find their own way to get the amp- guitar synergy working, to get their desired tone!!! Art
