Only crackles on the reverb channel
I've disconected all of the reverb and footswitch
Installed a new speaker output jack and stilll as the bass notes tail off it starts to crackle like crazy !
every tube has been swapped out and still nothing !

The speaker works perfectly on the non reverb channel so ???????
I replaced the 100K's that feed V-2 with 1 watt CC's

what else powers the reverb only ?
Is the tremolo possible causing it, even with everything at zero and the footswitch disconected ???

Seriously guys I'm going acoustic !

Chris, to take the vibrato out of the equation: you can unsolder the yellow wire from the intensity pot and cover the end with electrical tape. Leave the tube in the amp. The reverb section should be considered as a seperate low watt amp. So it's just, power supply, input through to output. Art

Your gonna love this !
First off the speaker had been running backwards the whole time i had it

Now the only time it does the crackle at the tail of the notes is when I use my comp pedal.
Now before you say its the pedal, it does not do it with any other amp so...........
same exact set up and guitar into anything else I own and its not there.

How could it be that the deluxe is picking up noise from the signal that others don't and again only on the reverb channel ?????

Can't help on the tech issues  ..... I'm sure you'll get the issues resolved.

Regardless - Congrats on the DR.

Thanks for the encouragement !

So I played it for somewhere around 25 to 30 minutes and with the Tele and a humbucker I was able to get crackle without the comp. (blows that idea) !

It only crackles with a note played and really badly when the amp is hot and you hit a power chord with the e-string.

The only other 100K that looks old is the one at v-1, however the normal channel does not crackle.

Buts it almost has to be a resistor somewhere !!! It sounds like a CC that's sizzling but only one a low note ????
Crazy !!!!

Yes Steve I most certainly did !!!
This is one well hidden noise maker !
I went over every stink'n solder joint on the board, I had recently checked the filter caps too.

This one has me stumped, as usual

Chris, have the pots been cleaned? How about the 10K resistors between the filter caps. do they look to be original? Art

I would start by replacing the Plate resistors on the reverb tubes and PI tube. Really, get rid of all CC resistors and replace them with metal film type. Keep in mind that CCs weren't used because of tone, but because that's what was available, the belief that CCs do something for tone is a myth. You wouldn't worry about replacing the original caps if they were faulty, right?

Well Shimmilou I won't debate the actual benefit or lack there of when it comes to CC's I will tell you more folks believe the myth than those that don't and it will indeed effect the value of any vintage piece.
so I tend to keep them as close to stock types and values as possible.

After all ya can't take it with ya and eventually someone buys all our stuff or inherits it !

Art I'm putting together a shopping list at AES for the weekend or early next week when I;ll start swapping out old resistors till the noise is gone.

Then a nice weber 12F150 (I'll box up the original) !
The amp still sounds amazing, and if I keep making notes I never hear the tail off and crackle

I doubt if replacing the CCs with metal films will affect the value any more than replacing a two-prong electrical cord with a safer three-prong will, and both changes are more than beneficial to any amp, sound and safety. Either way, CC or metal film will be replacements, not original to the amp anyway.

Besides, according to you, and most here, you won't ever part with a Blackface DR, and if it's in good shape, no one will open it up to make sure that there are CCs in there. I would actually prefer an amp that already had the CCs replaced, saving me the effort of something that I would surely do anyway.

Do you want a museum piece or one to play that will be reliable?

BTW, in case you didn't know, the CCs can catch on fire and burn, thus one more advantage to metal film (flame-proof).

On a side note, since it seems that you already have a business, you might want to try and get a registered retail merchant certificate and sign up with CE Distribution (AES business account), and get a really good discount on your parts. :D

You must have missed where I said I won't debate you 8)

Your opinions are strong, I get it.
And your probably right, however the CC's lasted 46 years in this one and yet it survived.
so as for the flaming matchbox your trying to convince the world an amp with CC's is.
Well lets just say I kinda doubt its that much of an issue.

Seriously though, I'm done debating !!!!

Hey Aclempoppi
Leave to you to ask such a simple question !!! & to have it be the answer !!!

Brother I would have sworn that I hit some deoxit on those pots, I know I did shoot the input and output jacks with the none lube stuff, Know it for a real fact !!!!
I hosed em down with the lube added stuff and the amp is completely whisper quiet !

So Mr. Art next you see me post with amp difficulties would you please post a check list of DUH !!!! whay didn't I try that first stuff ???? Please !

Oh well I needed to get rid of those 1/4 watt CC's the last owner installed and use 1 watt CC's in their place.
Gee Wiz

The amp is singing like an Angel again !!!!

Glad you got the pesky problem fixed, Chris!!! Actually it was Beemer's comment about contact cleaner(fixing all kinds of problems) and your discription of the carbon sizzle, that triggered the suggestion. To be honest, that same noise had come up a number of times over the years . But I couldn't remember the "magic bullet"!! Looked up some past reapair logs, in the dusty drawer, and tubes and cleaning kept rearing it's head. Keep Pickin' !!! Art
