Hello, can anyone please help me identify these speakers. The numbers are quite rubbed out and I can't seem to make sense of what's there (speakers are not my area of expertise).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Nick Stoubis

Nick,

they llok like CTS alnico. With the "137" at the end of the 6-digit code.

Interesting. It's just a WAG.

Thank you guys -- would there be any chance of them being 32 ohm?

Nope.

From what I saw on FB those came from a Super Reverb?

Four 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel. If they are still good and you measure with a VOM they will probably measure closer to 7ohm though.

These speakers were in my 1965 super reverb when I bought it. It didn't quite sound right and my repair guy said a couple of the speakers were frozen but that also these speakers were not the original speakers for the amp and that they probably came from a bassman cabinet and were 32 ohms.

He is a reputable repair person but every time I have tried to figured out what these speakers are, I have had different responses and many people think these came from a super.

Is there any possibility that my repair person was correct in his statement?

"033137" of one speaker and the style of that blue sticker... prolly means 33rd week of 1970. 137 = CTS.

As far as I remember, the narrow panel tweed Bassman (if 0 = 1960) ran four 8-ohm speakers for total impedance of 2-ohms. Maybe, there was a 32-ohm variant?

4-10", 8 Ohm
CTS AlNiCo
Oxford 10L6
Jensen C10R

I'm not in agreement on the CTS code number. 137 should be at the beginning back in that era. NOT at the end of the number. (and that looks like 187 anyhow.)

Measure them with a VOM and see what they read. At any rate, the Super Rever used, and still does, 4 8ohm wired in parallel. If they are as old as they look, they may need a reconing.

The 137 appears like it could be 187 and it is at the end. So possibly not CTS or is that hard fact that they are CTS based on something else I am not seeing...???

I just took a multimeter that I borrowed from a neighbor and I tried measuring and the values looked like 4 ohms but it is a manual analog meter so I am not sure how accurate it is. Pilot error might be a problem too -- I am a much better guitarist than I am with electronics.

It's not uncommon for speakers to read lower than what they are rated at. That happens more often than not. It's not a problem unless they read really, really lower or totally shoted.

Check all four of them and the values are all probably a little different from speaker to speaker.'

I saw in you FB post that they just don't sound right anymore. What is it that has changed? You are looking at a 48 year old amp/speakers. Lots of things, including speakers, could be affecting your tone.

Problem is, if the code is "033187" 033 = manufactuing code (I know of no manufacturers code that begins with a zero) and 187 = 1961 or 1971, 87th week?

Interesting. :?: :D :?:

87th Week?

Nick, are there any other numbers on the "frame" of the speakers?

Those speakers are CTS alnico's. The square labels on the magnet shields were used until the supply was exhausted circa 1971, replaced by the more prolific blue/silver "donut" style decal. The part number on the label indicates the speaker is intended for a Super Reverb, Vibrolux Reverb, or Super Six Reverb. These speakers came in three different impedances, contingent upon their application. For the SR, VR, and SSR -- 8 ohms. For the Bassman 10 -- 16 ohms. And for the 4 x 10 PA column (discontinued around 1970) -- 32 ohms.

Case closed, HTH

Arjay

I'm inclined to agree with Arjay. I don't think there is anyone on the planet with more in-depth historical knowledge of all things Fender. Especially the 60's and 60's.

I am new and if ARJAY is the man, I will take your word and his too.

BMW - 87th week long year...lol

Art -- it says:
F102566 on the frame

Also, if my reading is correct 3-4ohms would be a little low to run in the super wouldn't it?

Regarding the sound of the amp that I commented on my FB page -- I was commenting on the what I have had in the amp which are WEBERs (Two 10A125's (30 watt) and two 10F150's (25 watt) on bottom). I have thought they sounded harsh - here is a recording which has had some delay, compression and EQ added after to get rid of the harshness.

http://youtu.be/wwYNz3OYDEU

I had someone wire the amp to another vintage super with original alnicos and it improved the tone of the amp immediately. We even tried a closed back marshall 1x12 and that sound better too. I am not sure what's up with the WEBERS -- it appears everyone thinks very highly of them and my ears aren't hearing what everyone says about them. You know when you think one thing but everything you read says the other.

That is why I am so interested in figuring out what these speakers are because I would like to get accurate alnico speakers for the amp and I can't find them thus far and everyone either recommends new speakers like the WEBERS. I have tried the WEBERS and the just aren't sounding that great. Who knows why? One of them was blew right away too and I had it reconed and had to get a replacement so I was $900 deep with some repairs and the five weber speakers in an amp that I already overpaid for (I think $1750 - a lot considering the speakers were blown and I could not verify if they were the right speaker) and am willing to buy a whole entire new set of speakers. That said I might already have the speakers that I am trying to find...hence this post.

Do you see my dilema? I am not a hobbyist and am looking for a great amp to record with and I am willing to pay a premium to get it but I have already and I am still not there.

I have considered calling it quits with the super and just buying a new hotrod deville and calling it a day with vintage. In fact I could have bought 4 amps with what I am into this one and the tone is not there at the level of what those new amps would of had straight out of the box. Was looking for a little magic.
