So I got my hands on this Silverface Twin Reverb, dated it by the transformers to early 70s
I really can't tell what these speakers are, if they're replacements or factory or what
They're big, rusty with rectangular magnets with no markings on the basket rim. There is a marking on the back of the magnet but it's not stamped on to the magnet, it looks like the sticker was removed but the embossed part with the serial number still left a light marking. If you take a look at the pictures from my dropbox you can see what I'm talking about.

Any insight is appreciated

Looks like Celestion made in 1972, week 4. By style of magnet, looks like alnico.

The EIA Code is 67, so these are Eminence speakers. And they date from 72 (72XX, can't make out the two digit week number could be 04) so could be original. They are Alnico, and might sound pretty good and maybe worth a recone.

I doubt that these are original to the amp. Looking at the pics, I'm getting a Sunn or Ampeg vibe.

I have an early 70's twin with Utah speakers-ceramic. I installed a pair of WGS Vintage 30 clones and the amp sound great-much more efficient and better frequency response. Of course, I kept the stock speakers for resale. It's all subjective.

There is no redeeming social value to those OEM Utahs (aside from preserving them for their historical appeal to the amp's next owner).

It makes me chuckle that if one were to resell one of these fine amps, the "wisdom" is to put the crap back in and keep the good stuff. Gotta love the jeu ne se quois factor of collectors. The French have a cool term for "anal".

Purists prefer stock OEM for collectibility.

OTOH, professional players prefer tone.

I tossed dozens of Oxfords and Utahs into the dumpster back in the day, replacing them with JBL's, Altec's, EV's, etc and I never lost a minute of sleep over them.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust......RIP, you soulless pie tins.

So let me get this straight, Utahs and Oxfords sound bad? Come on Arjay, give us your real opinion (insert sarcastic emoticon here)
