I'd guess also aesthetics - he liked the look of the amp as wide as the cabinet vs. being "a little box" on top.

Right! The Marshall heads have the amp on the bottom of the cab, not the top. So, there needs to be more room for heat to escape up the unit.

Plus, your typical Mullard EL34 is not as tough against heat and other physical abuse as the RCA 6L6GC.

I can dig Musicman amps!!! Had a 410 sixty-five for many years, in the Blues band. St Petersburg EL 34's and a 12AX7(brand ?) PI, great amp!!! Art

I had a 210 Sixty five...great little amp. An old buddy has a 410 Sixty Five too, he loves that amp too! He uses it for Pedal Steel!
