Thanks, all --- for the comments! :D

They are the pink-based GE 7581A. Clear top with side getters. Ranks right up there with the RCA black plate 6L6GC. With a bit more output. Still has very good midrange, for a 6L6GC type.

If you can find some good ones, snatch them up.

Thanks Beemer...I will be on the lookout for some of those, as any tube that gets your stamp of approval has got to be a winner!

Tony, thanks!

The two new 6L6GC types that I've used and had good success (tonewise and good steady life) are SELECTED EH 6L6GC or the new TS reissued 6L6GC-STR.

I'm still a little leery of Chinese made big output tubes (6L6GC, 6550, KT-88, etc). They really need to be run-in a long time (like at least 10 hours) -- to burn off contaminates and keep them from going gassy or ballistic on you. Then, you can bias them and be kinda confident. TAD doesn't seem to burn-in tubes as long as they used to. Their new tubes really have that crazy "purple haze" going on, for a good week of daily use.

And how many ppl have a "test-bed" amp to burn-in tubes? Ok... I have two. One for 6V6GTs. and one for 6L6GCs. Old amps converted into burn-in puppies. You'd be real surprised how some tubes will jump bias --- like 10 or more mA. At a moments notice. But, will settle down to a nice steady output, after a good 20-30 hours of burn-in.

+1

I can vouch for both those brands.

Beemer...I have a set of TADs loaded into my Concert and didn't have any issues with the "Purple Haze" at all. Of course these were sets from at least a year or so ago. I really like the sound of them in it.

Good to know the new Tung Sols are good ones. I am curious about this tube burn in tool, you are certainly a tube conessouir.

T2,

I know this is going to sound silly... but if you happen to have any spare 6L6GC amp, you can use this amp to burn in any 6L6 or 6V6 tube(s). Just have the anode run 350 -380VDC and make the the output cathode-biased.

Run a cathode-tied 250-ohm, 5 watt resistor per pair of output tubes. No bypass cap. And have the OPT hook to a load (10-ohm, 10 watt is fine). No volume. No input. No small gain stage or PI tubes.

Just run the tubes until the bias settles down and the purple haze is gone.

:D
