So I have two amps that work great. One a bandmaster and the second a bandmaster reverb. My question is regarding the tolex and grill cloth. They are both showing their age. Would replacing them increase, decrease, or do nothing to the amps value?
Thanks

Depends. Are you planning to sell the amps? I think a GOOD re-tolexing and fitting of era-proper grille only can help the resale value. To me, amps that are reliable and look good from the get-go are a much better deal, than fixer-uppers.

No, I don't plan on selling them. I was just wondering if it would hurt the value if I ever decided to do the work.
They've been very reliable to date. They get about 4 hours use every week and they sound very good.

Thanks for your input.

In the collector's eyes (as opposed to a player), refinishing a vintage guitar can cut the value by up to half. I would think the same reasoning would apply to a vintage amp. But again, only to a collector. A good cleaning (Arjay has good advice on how to do that) would probably be best.

I've cleaned a few following the advice Arjay gave me.

That post really ought to be a "sticky" or a permanently-listed "FAQ".

Likewise, don't neglect the smaller details such as accumulated crud around input jacks and on front panels, nicotine-discolored numerals on knobs, and excessively-corroded bright switch screws. Tarnished beauty rings used on the input jacks of all silverface amps can be polished with any suitable jewelry compound to restore their luster.

Good luck with the Spring Cleaning! :D

I know this sounds obvious, but I'd remove the chassis, speakers, reverb tank, & wiring before cleaning the tolex and grille. SF front panel letterings are more easily erased, than BF amps. So, no solvents. And no excessive scrubbing.

Anyhow, all this has been posted before. Take it easy and the amps should look fresh.

+1

The best results are achieved when the amp has been "detail-stripped" prior to cleaning.

Wise decision  Nothing like a well clean up vintage amp!

Grill logos are easily restorable by patiently removing any flaking paint with a nylon brush (a chamber brush for an M-16 rifle is ideal) then respraying them in semi-gloss black. I like to shoot a coat of clear semi-gloss afterward to even out the sheen of the background. To remove any overspray from the tops of the chrome letters, gently wipe with a Q-tip moistened with mild lacquer reducer. The logos usually end up looking brand new as long as there are no serious dents, scratches, or pitting.

For straightening bent tilt-back legs, I've had excellent results using multiple hand clamps and pieces of 1x4 pine strip to act as a fulcrum point to focus the stress from the clamps to where it's required. The vintage "PAT. PEND." legs command a high premium and saving damaged blackface-era specimens are preferred to replacement with re-issued parts.
