It has a pair of no name el34's in it now that look very old and so a nice fresh pair may liven up an already sweet sounding amp.

If it ain't broke, don't "fix" it.

I agree Arjay
Still good backup tubes are a necessary evil
My reverb driver in that amp is strangely enough
An el84
I know it is weak and I gave away the brand new
RCA I had to a good friend with a little epiphone head
He uses in church
He said it improved his tone 100% and so it was worth
Giving it up !

Chris,

The EL84 makes a great reverb driver. If you look at the schemo of this part of the amp --- you see a cathode-biased, single-end amp. Like a smaller version of a Champ.

So, EL84 and 6V6GT make great output tubes driving a tank with a healthy 6-7 watts, versus the 3-5 watts from the anode-tied 12AT7.

You just need a good enough PT to power the EL84 or 6V6GT & a bigger reverb tranny to handle the extra output to the tank. Many ppl make DIY reverb units using an old Champ or some such OPT.

The YRM-1 I have is pretty cool, EL84 reverb driver and EL34 power tubes
all others pre amp tubes are 12AX7 and every tube in the amp as it turns out are GE made in hungary .
weird !

I know this forum might not have a ton of EL34 users, however i was wondering if anyone had tried the Tung-sol (new manufacture) ????

I have not tried the new Tungsol RI EL34s. For most vintage amps that take EL34s & place a lot of voltage on the plates, I've been using the EH 6CA7. A very tough tube. Slightly cleaner tone than, say the lush midrange of the NOS Mullard EL34 or GEC/MOV KT-77.

The only recently made EL34 tubes that I've used are the JJ E34L (1990 - early 2000s production) and the Svetlana (=C=) EL34.

And the slightly earlier made RFT EL34 (often labeled Siemens or Telefunken). Era 1970-1980s. These are very similar to the famous Tesla EL34 and E34Ls. Very good tubes. But, must buy them from a known sellers that really tests the tubes in amp conditions.

+1

Fender's Vibro King has used both of those tubes as a reverb driver at various times in its production run.
