I have the opportunity to buy a 73' Silverface Super Reverb off a guy for a fair price. I need a gigging amp pretty bad. I've been borrowing a Twin Reverb, and while I need it loud I think the Twin just goes too loud. On the other hand, I've liked practically every Super Reverb I've ever played! The '65 blackface Super Reverb has been something of a Holy Grail to me, but the price point has alway kept it out of reach. If the '73 sounds 80% as good, it would probably still be worth it considering it's much, much less expensive.

I'd love to hear people's opinions on these amps, plus anything I need to watch out for before I buy.

EDIT: My bank account and the fact that I need a car to go check the amp out are both telling me to hold off. I'm still interested in silverface amps in general, but I'm probably not buying one anytime soon.

Texasguitarslinger...I may be a bit biased, but the Super Reverb is the best blues amp you can buy! I have had a 72 SFSR and currently have a pretty pristine '65 and these are without a doubt the best sounding amps I have ever owned. The 72 had the CTS Alnico speakers and it sounded fantastic, and I am a fan of those speakers. My 65 has the CTS Ceramics which I like just a bit more, they have just a bit more clarity. Here are a couple pics showing the difference. Had I not found a great deal on the 65 BFSR, I could have easily lived my life with the 72 SFSR and not looked back. The one thing you want to make sure the amp has is good speakers and a tube rectifier, I believe the interaction between these two is what gives the amp it's great tone. And the reverb and tremelo is also "Super"...very lush...from a breathy whisper to full on Dick Dale Splash!

Good luck and this is the amp you won't part with and would fit your style of playing perfectly...trust me!

If there's any issue of import regarding the '70s-era silverface amps, it's the crappy cabinetry that FMI switched to beginning with the 1971 model year. The chassis was still built largely using milspec components and Fender was still using the CTS alnico speakers. With some modest tweaks there's no reason why a '73 Super Reverb wouldn't sound just as nice as some of the blackface models and it would certainly be a better bargain than buying a new re-issue.

Believe me, if you get a good SR & restore it to reliable working order --- you'll won't be dissappointed, Very few amps fit the niche of the Super Reverb.

Well, the guy who's selling it said he'll probably still have it Sunday (which is the earliest time I can go check it out). I'm thinking of heading out his direction just to play it. That's really the only way I can decide. As far as funding it goes, I have several things that I could get rid of that would put it into my price range... Gotta love GAS!

Just don't overpay.

The amp's worth $1100, tops.
