Hey all,
I have a silverface quad reverb that i need to get new speakers for and want to know what you all think are some of the better choices out there. Of course i don't have the means to get a set of weber vintage 30's or some celestion alnico golds, but i'd like to get some good speakers. The amp's ohms are set at 4, so does that mean i need 4 16 ohm speakers? 16/4= 4 ohms, or am i totally wrong?

Fender Quad Reverb......world's first crew-served combo amp!

¡Muy peseda!

Your replacement speakers should indeed be 16-ohm -- wired in parallel to maintain a total system load of 4 ohms. Some of the modern Eminence ceramic models might work well in that amp (the Swamp Thang, Texas Heat, etc). You can frequently find bargains on these speakers by shopping Ebay.

Hi there, silverfacelp. Yeah you've got it right about the 16ohm speakers. I'm not that experienced with different brands, but Weber does have some good speakers at reasonable prices. You could also check out the Bay for low hour speakers. And they dont't all have to be the same brand. I have a Weber and Celestion in a 2X12 Band Master cab. Just some food for thought. Art

Well since Arjay beat me to the Ohm question, might I suggest another speaker alternative...Jensen MOD's. I know that the new Jensens do not have the best reputation especially when you compare them to vintage Jensens, but I put a set of these into a refurbed Bantam I did. I was very impressed with these speakers especially at the price they go for and since you mentioned price as an issue, you could do a lot worse than these speakers.

FWIW

Ever thought about two 15-inch speakers, instead of four 12-inch? Good ones project well and a bit more effiecient (everything else being more-or-less the same).

I love my D130F. But EV makes somes good vintage ones, too. A bit pricey. But If you get too cheap on those speakers --- you maybe re-coning or replacing piece-by-piece -- over a very short time. Esp with that amp. It has a LOAD of headroom.

Just a thought....

Good hunting! :D

You're probably right about the efficiency of the 15's, Beemer. But I remember Freddy King at the Troubadour, and Albert Collins at the Palladium, puttin' those Quads through their paces. Made me want get one for the Blues band, for years. There's no gettin' around the depth and air, that they can push! And they can sing like the LA River Choral Group!!! A stone soul amp!!! Art

Just how do you think the OP can accomplish that?

The amp's a '71 (or newer). The cabinet has lapped rabbet-joint corners with a glued-in baffle board. No practical way to remove it.

A better option altogether would be to convert this boat anchor to a head configuration and buy (or build) a stand-alone speaker enclosure.

Arjay,
Sorry, didn't realize that in this unit it was that difficult to replace the baffle board. Actaully I was thknig more of a 2 X 15-inch cab....
