Hey gang, hope all is well, I've been absent for a bit. As some of my previous exploits have amply demonstrated, I'm much more of a player than a tech. The most shadetree of mechanics in fact. I'm still trying to learn about tube amplifier function and design, and have some questions about terms. Can someone explain the differences/advantages/disadvantages to amps described as Class A, Class AB, open ended or push/pull in a relatively simple straightforward manner that a non-electrician could understand? Realize this is a pretty basic question, but maybe there are some resources forum members could recommend. Thanks, O...

If you want some good books that explain all this in simple terms, these are some good ones:

http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Amplifier- ... ap_title_0

http://www.amazon.com/How-Hot-Rod-Your- ... ap_title_0

http://www.amazon.com/The-Guitar-Amplif ... pd_sim_b_1

For more detail (and a lot of math!) I recommend these:

http://www.amazon.com/Circuit-Analysis- ... d_sim_b_39

http://www.amazon.com/Vacuum-Tube-Circu ... pd_sim_b_5

http://www.amazon.com/Vacuum-Tube-Circu ... pd_sim_b_5

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/075063 ... 04_s00_i00

Just for fun:

http://www.amazon.com/Amped-Illustrated ... d_sim_b_17

http://www.amazon.com/The-Soul-Tone-Cel ... d_sim_b_14

Thanks for your suggestions, gentlemen. I'll be checking out some of the texts you cited. Tho' I must admit the link to the Bassman book review that says,"derives every power tube in its gory details" sounds kind of intimidating! Thanks again, O...

It's my favorite book. I used it as a reference while building my Weber 5F6A clone kit to understand the circuit operation. It helped me understand why some of the mods I was making to the amp sounded the way they did and why Leo and his crew got it right the first time. The publisher (Ampbooks) has a great website with tube and circuit calculators as well as detail on many other amp circuits that I refer to all the time.
