So I've got my '69 Fender Bandmaster Reverb (40 watt) going into my Emperor 250 watt 4x12 (4ohm), but I'm getting hardly any response from it. Not enough to even remotely cut through unmiked drums. It seems the volume peaks when I hit around 3 on the volume knob and maintains that level between 3-10.

Any idea what could be going wrong? [I'm admittingly not tech-savvy]

When was the last time the amp saw any servicing or maintenance by a qualified tech?

I got it about 10 months ago, refurbished back to the blackface AB763 circuit. Do you think I should take it to get checked out?

cmaupin, I know this sounds silly (so forgive me) --- but are you using a SPEAKER patch cord or a GUITAR patch cord between the amp and the speakers?

I'm new here. This may not be the right way to get an answer (i.e., responding to this post) but I'll give it a go.
I have what I believe is a 73/74 Band Master reverb head (5005D). It hasn't been serviced since I bought it (in 73/74). I don't play it much but it's starting to sound dirty, and the reverb and tremolo aren't working.
I started looking into tube sets but then was asked several questions re: types, manufacturers, etc., that I couldn't answer. What I'd like is to keep all the attributes of the amp I have. It's as clean a sounding amp as I could wish for, and the reverb is great.
Any suggestions as to what tubes I should be looking for in order to maintain the 'original' sound?
Thanks.
PS. I'd post a photo but don't know how yet.
Randall

Hey Randy, welcome to the forum.

For your BMR, I'd recommend these new tubes to keep costs low:

Sov-Tek GZ34 rectifier
Electro-Harmonix 6L6EH power tubes
Tung-Sol 12AX7's (suitable substitute for the specified 7025's)
TAD or JJ 12AT7's (be sure to specify a balanced tube for the V6 phase-inverter stage)

I've used all of these bottles at one time or another -- they sound good, they're durable, and they won't require a supplemental congressional appropriation to afford.

Thanks for that. I'll share this info with the amp tech and take it from there.

Be sure to specify a matched duo of power tubes -- for EHX, that's about $45 for the pair.

I contacted the repair shop here and they say they use groove tubes (from the factory) only. Given what you've suggested it appears I'd be better off buying the components myself and giving them to the rep to do the repair. What do you think?

I'm not a fan of GT's although others on this forum find them quite acceptable. That said, the option remains yours. You can abide the shop's recommendation or cherry-pick your own tubes and ask them to install whatever you decide on.
