They were all pretty fair amps......but I have more important priorities at the moment.

(such as grenade-proofing the "Fender fortress" so some miscreant can't relieve me of my existing collection while I'm away)

Hey guys, I got the amp fired up by simply installing a new fuse.

So it sounds pretty sweet already, I'll need to get new speakers and tubes, but all that is expensive.

So for now .... do these parts look ok for this amp?:

Strings...yeah those will work with your SR. I was kind of curious how this project was coming along. Like I said no need to be in a hurry.

Were you able to get the black paint off the drip edge molding? Post some pics as you get each phase done, we'd love to see it.

Hey T2Stratman, it was actually a bit of a surprise that it just needed a fuse to get it going. The guy I got it from (my old singer/guitar player) said he already tried a new fuse. I guess he tried the wrong fuse. He said he literally found this amp on the side of the road with the trash.

As far as the terrible black paint job, I was hoping to get my hands on some helicopter cleaner. I know a helicopter pilot and he had some stuff in a spray bottle that works wonders. Hopefully he has some left (retired now).

I was playing through the amp last night, it really sounds nice as-is. I guess there's no way to turn the reverb on without the pedal?

Found along side the road with the Trash?...wow talk about a FIND! Glad it was something simple. Although I would take it to a tech for a check up just the same...it is probably due for a CAP job at the very least.

Hope the Helo cleaner works...and yep, unless you got a footswitch you can't turn on the Reverb. If it is like most Super Reverbs...the Reverb will be magical. I have had two Super Reverbs a 72 and my current Blackface 65 and the reverb goes from a whisper to full on splash!

Yep T2Stratman, stuff like that never happens to me. Luckily it happened to someone I know. It really would have been a shame if this thing ended up in a landfill.

What's cool is I happen to play in a band that plays oldies, this amp is perfect for my band. I played a show on Tuesday night, it's killing me that the amp is functioning but needs work before I can use it for concerts.

It's definitely getting a cap job and tubes before I play gigs with it, a forum member who isn't far from where I live offered to help out which is so very much appreciated. The speakers aren't ideal but they sound surprisingly good considering what they are.

So in the mean time, do you think I should not use the amp until it's been serviced? Could I cause expensive damage by switching it on and playing a little at low volumes?

Hey y'all, I work with an electrician who is willing to change my 2 prong power cable to 3 prong. He's a qualified electrician, but not a 'vintage tube amp guy' so I wanted to run this by the forum before I buy the replacement cable.

1. Will this work? Is it thick enough?

Power Cord, 3-Prong Grounded Male to Bare End, 16 AWG, Black, 8ft

2. Are these instructions correct for my Super Reverb Amp?:

Any help is much appreciated. :D

Strings...all that looks right but I am no tech...I have a great one here and he gets all that work! I am sure Beemer, Arjay, or Shimmilou will be along soon to verify the tech stuff.

Glad to see you are still plugging away getting this amp re-furbed :!: :!:

Thanks T2Stratman, yep I'm getting all the small cheap stuff out of the way. I also found a training course nearby where I can learn to properly and safely clean and maintain the insides of the amp. I'm not even looking at the tolex or grill cloth until it's fully functional.

As far as the question I asked above, I only ask this here because I want to be able to hand the electrician everything he needs to get the job done. This isn't something I can pay for, so I didn't want to ask him to do any research into obtaining and ordering the right parts.

Any help is much appreciated.

Yes, that diagram & description are correct. And 16AWG is plenty good.

One note: ground the green line to the chassis as close to the ppower cord's entry into the chassis. To the power transformer nut is often used. this keeps ground loops and hum from the cord to a minimum.

Good luck!

BMW2002Ti, thank you so much for this - I will definitely pass this info on to the installer. And thanks for taking a look at the stuff I spec' out. I was pretty sure, but I HATE the RMA process, so thanks very much for confirming this. :D

I promise when it's all done I will post some demos here.

Strings...cool that you found a course that can help you out. One issue I see here though, without knowing what is needing to be fixed on amp, it is going to be hard to hand the electrician everything he needs.

It most certainly will need a cap job (the ones under the metal box), maybe new tubes, power, preamp, and rectifier. But there may be other components that have drifted out of tolerance and need replacing, you will need a good amp tech maybe for that stuff. Mine amp tech only charged like $90 for a cap job, new tubes (and the associated re-biasing, but I supplied the tubes), he also changed a couple out of tolerance components, tightened the tube sockets, not a bad price I thought.

Hey T2Stratman, yep we're only doing the power cord for now, the real work will be done by an amp tech later down the road.

I was hoping the course might be BYOA (bring your own amp) so I can possibly get an evaluation done by the instructor, or even have it fixed up by the end of the course.

$90 sounds like a great price for all the work you had done! The biggest problem for me is buying all the pricey parts. I need new speakers which sucks. It looks like speakers and new tubes could run around $300? So for now I'm happy doing little bits of restoration over a long time. Somehow I think this 'hobby' might continue after this amp is fixed up.... :D

For 6L6 tubes I have good luck with the new TAD 6L6's ($50 for a matched pair) and have heard good things about the Tung-Sols as well. The Tung-Sols only run about $40 for a matched set.

As for the 5U4GB rectifier a good NOS Jan-Phillips only runs about $45 too!

The speakers you could replace down the road once you the electronics sorted out and get the new tubes in...just have to keep it long term. Keep an eye on e-bay sometimes you can get a whole set of four. The pyles in there will work for a while until you can find some good upgrades and have the cash saved up.

As for the course, it would be fantastic if it turns out to be a BYOA one! Then you can not only learn but get good over the shoulder OJT!
